This is enshittification: Surpluses are first directed to users; then, once they're locked in, surpluses go to suppliers; then oncelocked in, the surplus is handed to shareholders and the platform becomes a useless pile of shit. From mobile app stores to Steam, from Facebook to Twitter, this is the enshittification lifecycle.
Then, it started to cram your feed full of posts from accounts you didn't follow. At first, it was media companies, whom Facebook preferentially crammed down its users' throats so that they would click on articles and send traffic to newspapers, magazines, and blogs. Then, once those publications were dependent on Facebook for their traffic, it dialed down their traffic.
Drive a revolution then exploit the revolution. The process is actually built into venture capital funding and the subsequent public listing model. Following a pattern well established by Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, Meta/Facebook, Alphabet/Google etc.
you have lost the plot
Holy crap, what a fantastic lede. Yes. 100. This. All Day.

Sounds like Twitter.
This is great! Appreciate the clarity.
Tiktok is already dead
You just described Twitter by Musk.
Good read. Stories like this remind me of the magic I felt the first few years I fired up 'the internet' or sent emails from the middle of the Atlantic when I was in the Navy. Its been too much for too long. Its our fault and theirs...
Interesting read, you can see those patterns everywhere.
Streaming services follow the same life cycle.
doctorow .. umm
No problem:
It doesn't need to be saved.
Perhaps pick a more g-rated term for next time? doctorow Might have more of a chance at a wider audience. Good read, though. Engarbagification
