Last year, my most-read Emmy column centered on the idea that perhaps it’s time to drop the notion of separate “actor” and “actress” categories — not only at the, but at all entertainment awards shows. After all, it does seem antiquated to pit women against women, men against men, and then leave others out altogether.
Yes, dropping the gender distinctions might decrease the number of individuals who can call themselves “Emmy nominees” — but maybe not. With one, non-gendered category, you could expand to 10 slots. And you could also introduce additional categories so that performers are competing with other performers from similar shows. Performers in action shows versus performers in action shows. Stars of dramedies versus stars of dramedies. And sitcom leads versus sitcom leads.
Ultimately, having “actress” and “actor” designations still leaves no room for nonbinary performers, and also perpetuates the sexist origins of segregating nominees by gender. The Emmys are different; it’s hard for a 25,000-member organization to change overnight. But I am encouraged when I see things like this year’s Emmy Awards nominations for limited series/TV movie director — in which four of the six nominees are women.
Handling this in the most stupid way ever🤦🏻♀️ demanding your rights by wiping the rights of women who fought and still do to this day for recognition is not it. Just add new categories rather than wiping other genders, cause that will only result in inequality AGAIN.

As much as I've enjoyed award shows for the red carpets etc they really are anachronistic. Overall which shows or films or actors get nominated is largely political anyway. Time to dump the awards altogether and change up the formats to yearly reviews.

Bad idea because Hollywood isn't close to being gender inclusive enough to do this - it would be wall to wall male awards with the occasional token black or female award. Best idea? Shut down award ceremonies - they're just marketing for films anyway & have zero meaning any more
If that happened, there would be more people snubbed and every year they would have the same ones nominated, leaving no room for new talents to be recognized. And I don’t think that having separate categories for actor and actress is a “gender difference”.

Well, as an exercise, take the Actor and Actress winners at the Oscars in the past 10 years and try to guess which Actress would beat the male winner in the same year? In my opinion, only one for sure (Stone). Blanchett could beat MM and Frances Mc, Oldman. The rest? 0 chance.
