Hollywood often remakes foreign films, particularly comedies, with American stars. Why?

FOREIGN-LANGUAGE films and television series have made considerable headway in America in recent years. “Narcos”, a Spanish-language drama about the drug trade, was released on Netflix in 2015 and is still thought to be one of the most popular shows on the streaming site. “Okja”, a South Korean action-adventure film directed by Bong Joon-ho, became a sensation after it was released on the platform in 2017., Mr Bong’s latest film, at the Oscars on February 9th was particularly significant.

To be sure, these remakes can yield financial dividends. Whereas the French film “Le Dîner de Cons” made $4m at the global box office, “Dinner for Shmucks” , an English-language version starring Steve Carrell, made $86m. “Gloria Bell” bested “Gloria” by $5m. Less than a month after its release, “Downhill” has already gained more momentum than “Force Majeure”.

“The Birdcage” managed the same trick with its source material, “La Cage Aux Folles” . It told the story of gay partners who hide their sexuality while meeting their son’s prospective in-laws; Mike Nichols, the director, applied this set-up to the culture wars in America. With strong chemistry between Nathan Lane, who starred as a drag-show star, and Robin Williams, who played the more grounded of the pair, “The Birdcage” sang.

Easy money.

Why? American Artists running out of material? Stupid and foolish to waste the money!

The results are usually awful. Hollywood has launched yet another remake of the excellent French comedy 'The Tall Blonde Man With One Black Shoe.' To be titled 'The Tall Orange Man With No Black Supporters.'

Out of ideas

Because they speak English 🤔

Foreign countries remake Hollywood movies all the time also.

Because they are too lazy to think of the idea themselves?

Laziness?

That's just as weird as Hollywood picking a British actor to play an American role..

Easy...because most folks in the U.S.A. don't watch many foreign films and Hollywood knows they'll make $ by casting known comedic celebrities in remakes.

Familiarity?

Because a lot of my fellow Americans can't handle reading subtitles?

Making movies isn't as easy at it seems...
