last week that Franco, who is not Hispanic, will star opposite Ana Villafañe, who portrays the title character Alina Fernández Revuelta, Castro’s daughter.Colombian-born actor John Leguizamo took to Instagram to denounce the casting.
“How is this still going on? How is Hollywood excluding us but stealing our narratives as well? No more appropriation Hollywood and streamers!”“To get there on such a tough look to cast, we used Fidel Castro’s ancient Galician as our focal compass, and then combed through the entire ranks of actors with Latin roots in Hollywood to find someone who has a similar facial structure,” lead creative producer John Martinez O’Felan...
All I care to add to the debate is here in California, the birthplace of American cinema and home of so many iconic productions, Latinos (mainly Mexicans) make up the majority of the population yet are given hardly any notable roles. This is a debate that should be broadened
Would those be Latinos of Mexican descent, Guatemalan descent, Ecuadorian descent, Cuban descent, Colombian descent, Peruvian descent, Venezuelan descent or Brazilian descent?
The libs of Hollywood living by all the intersectionality rules they've supported makes me happy 🥳
Serious question - does anyone object to casting Giancarlo Esposito as a Chilean? He's not Latino.
Black actors portraying white founding fathers in Hamilton is so woke and inclusive. James Franco, a descendant of Spanish immigrants portraying Fidel Castro, a son of a Spanish immigrant is offensive as Franco isn't Cuban enough. 🤔
Nope. Don't care about either of them. Nada.
Honestly, Castro as a villain is way more interesting than Pablo Escobar
This smells like Fake News.
This is what people are upset about? Seriously?
nobodys actually mad. nice clickbait
Yeah, Galicians and Portuguese are two totally unrelated peoples, LOL.
I get it. But he looks like Castro
Can we please have Che played by a crossdressing, obese Asian identifying man to offset this great injustice
Actually Fidel's parents were Spaniards.
So I guess the 'stay in your lane' folks won't be playing any parts outside their own lane? Careful what you wish for.
Hot take here: I think he can pull it off.
Were they out of piles of horse crap? That’s the only true resemblance of Castro
If it’s a romantic comedy they should use Luis Guzman.
Can Justin Trudeau act
Clayton Cartenas of the Mayans TV series
No it doesn’t
Why? I thought we are one race
So Ana de Armas can play Marilyn Monroe but he can’t play Castro?
how many Latinos?
Remember when journalists reported the news instead of manufacturing it?
It’s pretty good casting IMHO. Neither of them are saints. There’s a good physical resemblance and not only is Franco a Latin surname, it’s also the surname of the guy at the other end of the Top 10 longest serving dictators (Spain’s Francisco Franco)
I don’t think Fidel Castro is someone who Latinos proudly associate with lol
I mean, I get it but also, he looks just like him.
First off, he looks just like the guy. Second, Franco’s family is from nearly the same region of Spain as Castro’s. This is dumb. People should be upset because he’s a sexual predator and a bad actor, not because he’s not “Latino enough”.
Witch Latinos are you talking about with your schitty reporting? Name sum or get the EFF off the POT
Only a few loud activists. Most of us don't care.
An actor pretending to be something other than they are…the scandal.
If by Latinos you mean one guy than sure ok
Castro was a horrible person. I have no interest in seeing it either way.
This is actually an odd take. Technically not a race swap. It'd be like getting mad that Patrick Stewart an Englishman portrayed a character of French descent (Jean-Luc Picard).
One Latino and also, who cares? He looks like a good fit for the role.
So not that he is a sexual predator, but his race. OK.
