per se, but I suppose it would have to be when the ostensible protagonist Paul Bäumer watches one of his school buddies attempt to surrender to the French—only to be torched with a flamethrower at close range before he’s finally shot.
After all, why offer viewers a reprieve from the blood and guts by leavingthe famous pages where Bäumer goes on leave and struggles to live in polite society again after what he’s witnessed and done? Instead, why not just insert an entirely new set of characters, higher-ups who drink fancy wine and ride on fancy trains and include a bloodthirsty general so clichéd that he spends the movie sitting in his mansion literallyhas the effect of a “pumped-up miniseries” that will be lucky to...
It's not very good, if it's the same one I saw on cable. The old one is five times the movie.
“It’s bad enough that even they don’t always have the words for how bad it is” could also be used to describe this review.

This article is dumb. German Critics & What hate the Film. A film that is nominated in the Academys OPEN Best Picture Category (which is mentioned) But the Picture was also [checks notes] GERMANYS ENTRY & nominated in the Best International Film Category (not mentioned)
I sympathise with Matrix fans. There is only one All Quiet on the Western Front movie.
daveweigel The film's worst transgression is using the armistice as a plot gimmick. Remarque ended his novel in Oct. 1918 to subtly reinforce the pointlessness of the war. That said, a movie should be made about Matthias Erzberger, who signed the armistice and was assassinated for doing so.
I highly recommend the audiobook version narrated by the late, incomparable Frank Muller. This review confirms my suspicions about the film, which I expect to forego.
daveweigel Just makes the German Critics look dumb. It literally is Germanys Entry into the Best International Feature. Doesnt really matter what the critics say. Its a great film and Ive seen every version of it, back to Milestones, plus 10,000 other films & this film is a real achievement

Believed I was the only one that thought some of this - glad to see many others did as well. I mean it’s not a terrible movie just something is missing…. And that ending was so predictable and lame! 🙄
