'What's more cool than seeing the black hole in the center of our own Milky Way?'

"I wish I could tell you that second time is as good as the first one imaging black holes. But that wouldn't be true. It is actually better," Feryal Özel, EHT modeling lead and a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Arizona, said during a press conference Thursday.Özel has been examining Sgr A*, as the black hole is nicknamed, for 22 years since her graduate student days.

Snapshots of the M87* black hole obtained through imaging / geometric modeling, and the EHT array of telescopes in 2009-2017. The diameter of all rings is similar, but the location of the bright side varies. "You look at that image," Johnson added,"and that hole in the center has 4 million solar masses. That's incredible."

"It's pretty amazing what we were able to do, by bringing together people with lots of different expertise," Bouman said in the same press conference.

Over Sagittarius A you mean? ;)

Great!

That sucks.

Sample return mission from mars could go straight to the ISS first, in isolation many tests could be run there, before returning to earth in the normal way...contained if need be..!!! Or scientist could go and visit it there...safely..

apparently the universe cant tri-force

This is certainly a historic event. Never before has a photo been taken using a radio instead of a camera. Radio telescopes are worthless. An array of radio is worthless to the Nth power. Well, a lot of money changes hands so that's scientifically worthless.

So , that’s where my missing socks went . Now I know.

We orbit this

Nice pic but as previous one was made using scientific method to get all the measurement data but non-scientific method to obtain the image. It's a long discussion but for me it's a new kind of Millikan experiment.

Milky Way is very tasty but I like Mars or Twix much better 😂

About this kind of illustrations, jet spreading from event horizon ok but i don't understand the other side how can jet be visible as it shouldn't be seen because of black hole🤔

Amazingp]

Me and individual who can't appreciate the importance of the photo

“Sgr A* was considered a more difficult target to reveal than the black hole at the heart of M87, even though it is just half as far away”. Please correct and update 🙂

Reminds me just how small we are in the universe and what precious gem Earth is... among other gems yet to be discovered.

Trump says make America great again;'again', GOP 70 years; stop minimum wage increases, limiting healthcare or programs for middle class and end social security or assistance for the poor, Tax cuts top 1%, big business incentives and tax breaks!

Anyone got a non-Japanese version? /s

I don't understand the gravity of the situation

Ich glaube euch nicht

And people think they don't exist

Astronomers capture 1st image of Milky Way's huge black holeWASHINGTON (AP) — The world got a look Thursday at the first wild but fuzzy image of the supermassive black hole at the center of our own Milky Way galaxy. Astronomers believe nearly all galaxies, including our own, have these giant black holes at their center, where light and matter cannot escape, making it extremely hard to get images of them. How much did we pay for that telescope again?
