The report on a new Tesla Autopilot falality reveals the system repeated an error from the past

Tesla Model 3, with top sliced off as it drove under a semi-trailer in fatal accidentreveals that Tesla Autopilot was active when the Tesla Model 3 fatally crashed into, and went under, a transport truck crossing a Florida highway, in a disturbing mirror of the May 2016 crash which killed Tesla driver Joshua Brown -- also in Florida.

The report states that"From less than 8 seconds before the crash to the time of impact, the vehicle did not detect the driver's hands on the steering wheel." This phrase, which has been found in reports on other Autopilot accidents, is misleading. Tesla's systems only detect hands on the wheel if the driver applies some force to torque the wheel.

As such, having already had a fatality from failure to identify the broad side of a transport trailer, that would have to be very high on the list of the sort of thing they would want their fleet to find and identify for them, so they can confirm it never fails to perceive a crossing truck. Somehow, it still failed.

I will be discussing maps more next week, but it is worth noting that they also would have prevented the 3 US Tesla fatalities. That's because maps would improve the ability of radar to reliably detect these obstacles. Radar is an excellent sensor, in particular because it tells you how fast every radar target is moving. You get radar bounces off of other cars -- and it's obvious that they are cars because of their speed.

Tesla Autopilot was in use before car hit truck in fatal crash, NTSB findsA Tesla Model S car involved in a fatal crash with a semi-trailer in Florida was operating on the company’s semiautonomous Autopilot system, federal investigators have determined. LA Times, I cannot believe that you published such raw material. Looks you were paid to publish that. Tesla Autopilot neural net is learning every day as a child do growing and every day becomes better. Where is current data LA Times? Didn’t we know this when the accident first occurred? That is still NO TIME FOR Autopilot system on public roads, more likely coz of too many receivers and too many satelites working in the same area,so keep it sober and drive safely on ur own.

Tesla on autopilot crashed when the driver's hands were not on the wheelIt's happened again: A Tesla driver turned on the car's Autopilot feature and took his hands off the wheel before a fatal crash. Do these auto pilots have a valid drivers license ? Maybe they are DUI. Honestly... This is a perfect example of the lengths one human is willing to go to be unaccountable to the others around them. “The NTSB's report did not indicate the Tesla driver was at fault and said the investigation is ongoing” Gosh cnn. It’s like you make shit up out of thin air or something.

Tesla’s Autopilot Was Engaged in Fatal Florida Crash, Investigators FindTesla’s driver-assistance feature was active and the driver’s hands weren’t detected on the wheel during a fatal crash in March, U.S. safety investigators said, a finding that could amp up scrutiny of the car maker’s Autopilot system. Nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day. An additional 20-50 million are injured or disabled. Yet $tsla gets a write up? At what point will the autonomous vehicle craze end? Companies need to understand that human nature requires us to be active participants in our lives. No one wants to be a passenger. If you drive on AP you are responsible, if it crashes you are to blame. So why does this ONE crash have to be brought up, and not one of the other thousands of human caused crashes?
