"I was pretty excited," Shanya said."I wasn't really expecting it."
Shanya also interns for her Chinese language teacher and helps grade papers. She hopes to continue learning Chinese in the future, she said. When she's not studying hard, Shanya enjoys writing and listening to music. "You really have to be patient," Shanya said."Stay focused. If you need to have some time away, it's OK. You can tell your teachers that because they know you're stressed."Shanya Robinson-Owens, 17, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been accepted into 18 colleges and was awarded over $1 million in scholarship money."We've always been extremely proud of her," Owens added."My mother has helped raise Shanya since she was a baby.
That’s awesome for her. But our society is rife with unequal hoarding. More people should be afforded opportunity... not just a select few for more than any one can reasonably spend on college.
I’m so jelly. Good for her. 👍🏽👍🏽
you can legally take all the scholarships from the colleges and buy a Krispy Kreme franchise ask me how I know
First, I’m going to say that I’m very happy for this young girl and her family. Nowadays, the stress of affording college is overwhelming for many families and I can’t imagine what a weight off their shoulders they must feel. I can’t imagine this because... THREAD 🧵
Pays to be black ⚫
This is the news I like to see!
If only it were that easy for everyone. My daughter graduated summa cum laude and got a $1500 scholarship for grad school. Meanwhile she’s looking for a job during a pandemic and is now stuck. 😢
Not enough
Congratulations to her
I love all these BS comments. A Black woman shows excellence and actually is actually moving up in the world and we see the typical BS comments: She shouldn't have applied or she taking away from others. BS
Love this story.
This is what excellence looks like 👀
White privilege.
If she had applied to 40 colleges she would've received $2mm in scholarships. So really she was offered $50,000 from each school? Not a big deal and certainly not newsworthy...
Wow abc. Great journalism 😂
Bravo to her! But...applying to each college costs $50-$100. Applying to 20 colleges is a lot of $$ to shell out. Maybe an economics class might help.
👏👏
Why and how did she get all this money, maybe gives some tips for everyone else.
Can I get some of that systematic oppression?
Get accepted by any decent colleges
The scholarships do not have to be paid. It is like Grandma saying you will get a gift that never arrives
Why apply to so many? Seems selfish, just an exercise in paper work or to inflate her own ego.
this is terrible news
decisions, decisions...
Damn, that oppression is rough!!! Almost as if thats a big ass lie Wonder what else dem kangz and kweenz be lying bout?
Congratulations
