Burton’s Dee Winters is the talk of the small town as the TCU linebacker plays on college football’s biggest stage.BURTON — At the Short Stop, owner Cathy Liles restocks a shelf as the lunch rush ends. A convenience store and local hangout, just a Hail Mary pass across North Main Street from the high school, the Thursday special is chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, corn and toast.

John M. Burton, the town’s namesake, came to the area from, ironically, Georgia in 1834, according to a historical marker located off Main Street. With Winters playing a lead role, Burton made back-to-back state semifinal appearances in 2016 and 2017, going a combined 26-4. In Winters’ senior season, Burton lost on a field goal in the regional final.

“Fridays are my slow nights during football season,” Liles, a Cy-Fair graduate, says of business at Short Stop. “This town loves football. Friday nights, the biggest thing going on is the football game. Everybody is there.

Ask enough people and most have a Winters story. Like the time as a high school freshman, just after transferring from Brenham, he asked coach Hodde if he could come and clean the hog pens. Or Winters’ love of horses.Dr. Edna Kennedy, Burton ISD superintendent, says what Winters has accomplished is a source of pride for the community and inspiration for current students.Winters isn’t the only Burton graduate that will be on the big stage Monday.
