'The election of president Biden, your appointment, and your commitment to the rule of law, racial justice, and police reform give Tamir's family hope that the chance for accountability is not lost forever.'

family sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland Friday asking that he reopen the investigation into Tamir's 2014 murder, and to convene a grand jury to consider charges against the Cleveland police officers who killed him.

Tamir was shot and killed outside a recreation center by Timothy Loehmann, a police officer who at that time said he mistook a toy airsoft gun for a real weapon. Tamir, just 12 years old at the time, has since become a figurehead of the Black Lives Matter movement. In December, former Attorney General William Barr announced that the Justice Department would not be pursuing criminal charges in Tamir's death, saying there wasn't enough evidence against the police officers involved.

"The election of president Biden, your appointment, and your commitment to the rule of law, racial justice, and police reform give Tamir's family hope that the chance for accountability is not lost forever," the letter from the family's attorneys reads, according to aLoehmann was fired in May of 2017, though his release was unrelated to the shooting but rather from lying about his employment history when he applied for the job.

In a statement, Tamir's mother, Samara Rice, said,"Tamir would have been 19 years old in June. I'm still in so much pain because no one has been held accountable for the criminal act that took his life. I'm asking DOJ to reopen the investigation into my son's case; we need an indictment and conviction for Tamir's death. I'm building his legacy. The Tamir Rice Foundation is very invested in the community and dedicated to creating change.

Family asks feds to reopen case on Tamir Rice police killingThe family of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was shot and killed by Cleveland police in 2014, asked the Justice Department on Friday to reopen the case into his death after it was closed in the waning weeks of the Trump administration. In late 2020, federal prosecutors said they would not bring charges against the two police officers involved, saying video of the shooting was of too poor a quality for them to conclusively establish what had happened. Rice's family said in a letter to the Justice Department that it believes Trump officials were uninterested in seeking justice for him because of political reasons and made the case needlessly complicated.

Mom’s Portuguese Rice Recipe on Food52I grew up in a household that was both Italian American and Portuguese American. My mom’s side of the family is Portuguese, and I was lucky enough to eat her delicious Portuguese food throughout my entire childhood. She was not alone; all of my many tias (aunts) were very active in the kitchen, and when the whole family got together, the feasting was unparalleled. (Please don’t tell anyone on the Italian side of my family that I said that, okay?) One of my favorite dishes that Mom made was her Portuguese rice. Variations on this dish exist throughout Portuguese cuisine, and like most things, everyone adds their own special touch. The star ingredient here is linguiça, which is a smoked pork sausage flavored with paprika and garlic. It’s a perfect one-pot situation and very much a “mom” recipe, which is probably why we ate it so often. I recently got together with my mom, and we embarked on the journey of re-creating her Portuguese rice recipe, which, of course, was never written down, like so many of the best recipes. We called a few tias and got their takes on it, and then set a course recipe-testing together. We didn’t stop until we were transported back in time to our kitchen table, enjoying a meal together as a family, my face covered in rice and hers covered in a smile. This is basically jollof rice.
