Sweden registered 752 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest daily rise since June, Health Agency statistics showed, the latest in a steady rise in infections in recent weeks after months of limited spread during the summer holiday season.

Sweden, which has been a European outlier in its avoidance of lockdowns and reluctance to recommend face masks, has so far not seen the kind of dramatic increase experienced in countries such as France and Spain and hospitalisations remain at low levels.

Chief Epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, the architect of a soft-touch pandemic strategy aimed at limiting rather than eradicating the disease, said the upturn in cases was primarily linked to young people and outbreaks at work places. Sweden’s coronavirus strategy has largely been based on making recommendations and getting information out to the public, leveraging people’s high level of trust in national and local authorities and eschewing legal mandates as far as possible.

And no deaths

But the braindead have been trumpeting Sweden's non-mask wearing non-lockdown as a 'success' ... or is that only coz they want to 'go back to normal' and have a pint !

No new cases of community transmission in New Zealand again today.

How unpleasant to see how many are either wanting Sweden's approach to fail or gloating over an increased number of cases. What's wrong with people these days?

davegreenidge57 2nd wave in affect.

Who the heck cares about cases? Only the death count matters and that is just going lower and lower as the cases go up.

Lockdown fallout: British deaths at home now exceed coronavirus:

Britain's untreated cancer/heart attack backlog reaches half a million:

False positive PCR test results, you mean. 🙄

Based on population, current UK infections 0.01%, Sweden 0.007%.

Before anyone freaks out about the headline, and call people who say 'look at sweden' 'covidiots', read the freaken article. And don't reply with saying that it's not at zero, or lower than all other countries. That's not an argument, you have to look overall and at every case.

TheBigWardster

London itself has almost the same population as the whole of Sweden. 🙄🤷‍♂️

800 cases is hardly shocking, and deaths are still very very low, don’t think it’s as serious as you’re trying to mate out.. oh there’s a surprise 😒

Sweden - making toadmeister and his Covid Flat Earth Society look like mugs again.

but swedes are very nice people

Cases piers, cases!!!!!!

Does the test pick up flu?

So there’ll just not lockdown again and some people will die. We will/are locking down again and some people will die. I know the approach I prefer, the one where we can actually live our lives!

Cases? You sure ? They arnt positive tests from a PCR test that can show up dead fragments from flus etc? You sure about that piers?

harryw79

Cases, shmases Belgium & Spain reclassified their 'cases' & are using hospitalisations or PCR cycle of 30 & symptoms. Why is the UKs catastrophic legislation still based on results of a test not fit for purpose? 👇🏽 People are losing everything. COVID19

Yes but how is that significant if not compared with hospitalizations and deaths

No mention of hospitals being overwhelmed. Things must be under control.

Vaccine won’t work then no need 👍

People want Sweden to fail because they need proof their 'self sacrifice' and 'unselfishness' was worth it. And they want to maintain a moral superiority to the 'reckless' ones. They'll never admit they could have been wrong and there was another option

I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees!! Thanks Sweden

Fortunately, daily Covid deaths in Sweden remain very low:

I thought they had herd immunity

ajaykoshy291993 FYI

I’m not sure why people treat this news as hugely significant. It’s simple to see that the rise in tests corresponds with the case rise. What matters most is that there are hardly any people in the country hospitalized for Covid.

Relaxed approach not going well.

Laurie_Garrett One of the problems with reactions to these articles is that people are comparing McIntosh apples to Granny Smith apples. Have made several trips to UK, France, Spain, Italy, Denmark & Sweden - very diff in societal norms & lifestyles, living/work spaces, demographics, etc.

752 cases Piers. How many in the UK, do remind us?

AlexBerenson what say you?

So when we pull the face masks off, the real villains could turn out to be the same people proclaiming to read out of the storybook of 'the Science'. But unlike a fictitious fantasy, we won’t live happily ever after.

The reality and consequences of what we’ve done to our liberty, economy and health will continue for us still living down here on planet Earth. Perhaps then, it’s down to us, and not Doctor WHO, to lead the way and save the world from the malevolent evil that has descended on it.

After the negativity, paranoia, moaning and squabbling of Britain, Sweden was paradise. The contrast struck me almost immediately at the supermarket. Usually the sky-high Scandinavian prices leave me wincing in anguish.

But your ilk picks on Sweeden because they didn't lockdown like everyone else...well guess what....there rise from 300 cases to 400 cases per day is better off than anyone in Europe at the moment. And their death rate is lower than the UK, Spain, Italy, and...yes, the U.S.

Spain?

Sweden never waited for the science to come in. They have paid a high price because they refused to use evidence and science. Herd Immunity can not work. The antibodies only last 3 months. On the 4 month you can get re-infected.

Laurie_Garrett But 'the Sweden model' right?

The UK...

To...France....

Agenda-driven corona-bro propaganda. Trying to lump Sweeden in with the rest of Europe. Give me a break...compare this...

take that rather than UK stats any day
