after days of unusually cold temperatures, bodies are being found of people who likely froze to death as they struggled to stay warm after electricity was cut to millions of homes
Hypothermia can set in if the body loses heat faster than it can produce it and if it falls below about 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Normal body temperature is around 98.6 degrees. MedStar reached a peak on Wednesday with 77 hypothermia calls, Zavadsky said. Some people reported numb hands and feet, while others had more severe symptoms.
At first, the body will try to generate heat by shivering and boosting its heart rate. But if internal temperatures keep dropping, “those things start to slow down,” said Dr. Jeff Pothof, an emergency room doctor at UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin. The body will restrict blood circulation to extremities to maintain blood in the core and keep internal organs warm.Left untreated, hypothermia begins to affect the brain, making it hard to think clearly or move easily.
Poor circulation eventually prevents the heart, brain, and other vital organs from functioning, leading to death. About 32 people die from the cold annually in the U.S., according to the National Weather Service.
jessebyrnes Texas GQPers the blood and pain of these victims are on your resumes and your souls forever. You haven't been the 'Great State of Texas' for a long time and it won't be again untill you're all gone.
😢😢😢
Charge GregAbbott_TX, tedcruz, JohnCornyn with dereliction of duty, willful neglect.
RussellKJV1611 So sad😢
💔appalling news
💔
Turns out regulations are put in place for the safety and well being of Americans. The fact that it costs money should not be a factor, regardless of how much money lobbyists have to bribe our representatives
Republicans prefer profits over people. They would let their own mothers die for a buck. Cruz would let Trump call him a liar and his wife an ugo rather than grow a pair.
csiswim 😭
JulieFedup GOP good example of your leadership in a state. Way to be on the ball for your people.
People need to go to jail. Greed is why this happened.
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Texans may welcome regulation after this.
...
Now can you please do a story on Pine Ridge and other reservations who have dealt with this since forever....? Including that Indigenous children are committing suicide because they are tied of being cold...?
This is tragic & Did. Not. Have. To. Happen!!! 😠😠😠 May those who lost their lives ... may they rest in Peace. And, may their loved ones find solace in the love they shared during their time on Earth. 😧😧😧
😭😭😭 What a tragedy!
Texas Governor should resign for these deaths and mismanagement!
Heartbreaking :( God bless their souls. How can that happen in America GOP You had 4 yrs & Texas is a red state how could this happen?
😢
BeverlyFolkers There are many Texas government authorities elected as well as appointed who bear responsibility for this disaster. Deregulation has made fossil fuel companies rich and placed innocent people in jeopardy.
This should NOT occur in the USA!
At least 70 people have reportedly died from this weather event so far, so we just saw double our annual hypothermia deaths over the period of a few days. “About 32 people die from the cold annually in the U.S.”
This is horrific
Sad to know that! From Rio, Brazil.
Very, very sad. It could have been avoided.
Terrible.
kfdmnews Send the bills to Cruz!
Investigate, prosecute and incarcerate everyone responsible for this. Make an example of them.
herculezg Instead of cashing checks, as they are doing with inflated crisis price gouging, the empty suits should be facing judges for negligent homicide charges.

Horrific 😢
So terrible !!
ALL OF THEIR FAMILIES SHOULD SUE THE STATE, AND THE COUNTIES THEY LIVED.
“Some of the older people who died in Texas were found outside their homes. It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted them to go outside.” This seems consistent with the end stage of hypothermia when some people feel too hot (paradoxical undressing).
😢😢😢
💔
The question should be who makes the decision as to how many deaths are acceptable to save some money.Because that is exactly what happened. Whoever voted the leaders in are the people that made it. Solution change leadership stay involved, hold them liable
20% failure means 70% failed also this is how the Republicans play DISTRACTION!
Words fail me💔.
So much for the green energy to protect them from climate change...
If you need your bills paid, send me a dm
🤬🤬🤬Conservative policies consider us all expendable. We are nothing but livestock to the Conservative elite, to be worked, bled, and slaughtered at their whim.
So long as the government stays OUT of Texas's energy company it's all good! SMH
Deaths by capitalism. Hold the power companies accountable. Demand better
And in El Paso, a community that fared well because they weren’t part of that Texas grid, and they took the warnings seriously and prepared. Lawyers, start your engines.
Let’s see how the MSM frames the willful neglect by Texas state representatives and corporations that directly led to deaths that DID NOT have to happen.
💔
shocking & tragic also the article is an interesting read on the effects of hypothermia
This is too sad. Omg
It appears the Republican plan was successful.
Texans should find a good lawyer and sue the State.
Just awful 😞
Holy smokes
Was it cut or did they lose it cause of weather? The electricity.
And that, folks, is why Federal Regulations on infrastructure are important. Dereglation kills.
Thanks a lot, Biden. -Don
What's an 11 year old freezing to death vs the stock price of a deregulated energy company? I mean c'mon. You gotta break some eggs. - Ted Cruz.
Crazy that this happened in America. It’s almost like Republicans don’t care about people. 🤷♂️
So very sad bless their souls RIP
Keep voting red and you'll end up dead.
And who will be held accountable?
Usa, 2021 -- Incredibile. 3rd World?
sigh..so sad that this has to happen in 2021 😞
