Two new surveys by YouGov for Forbes Advisor reveal how Americans think colleges should look in the near future—and if a change in learning conditions means a change in costs should follow.asked Americans if colleges should reopen campuses in the fall. About one-fifth of respondents said yes, all colleges should reopen for in-person study. One-third of Americans said colleges should reopen, but with social distancing and other restrictions in place.

More than a quarter of respondents said colleges should offer remote classes only. The responses echo approaches that are already being considered by schools across the country. Major universities, including Stanford University, have hinted at combining in-person and remote coursework in the fall, or going entirely remote if the situation requires it.. “It will be a year of change and adaptation.”

asked Americans about the value of remote learning compared to studying on campus, and 68% of respondents said attending college remotely should cost less than attending in-person.
