JUST IN: The Supreme Court sides with student-athletes on NCAA compensation rules, opening the door to significant increases in payment for college sports.

Justice Neil Gorsuch delivered the opinion of the court.College sports raise billions of dollars from ticket sales, television contracts and merchandise, and supporters of the students say the players are being exploited and barred from the opportunity to monetize their talents. In 2016, for example, the NCAA negotiated an eight-year extension of its broadcasting rights to March Madness, worth $1.1 billion annually.

"So, once more, if the NCAA believes certain criteria are needed to ensure that academic awards are legitimately related to education, it is presently free to propose such rules -- and individual conferences may adopt even stricter ones," Gorsuch wrote. The lower court said that the NCAA must also permit student athletes to receive unlimited non-cash"education-related benefits" including post-eligibility internships.

Take away all athletic scholarships and it will be ok. Use that money for academic scholarships. Its a university, not a corporation. If you want the athletic department to run like a corporation then do so.

I thought colleges were educational institutions rather than tax payer funded athletic training facilities? Where is all this athlete compensation going to come from? Tuition increases of course.

Quite frankly sports needs to be funded by something other than tax revenue. Local school district spends almost 40% of its annual budget on HS football & basketball programs. They just eliminated 11 teachers to increase HS athletics budget. This decision will make it worse.

The ncaa has made billions off college athletes, its time for a change

Colleges: Sure, we’ll pay them $8/hr while they play or train, but no free tuition, boarding, food, medical insurance, advertisements, etc. Good deal.

Psssst: they’ve always been ‘paid’

Good.

The stranglehold the NCAA has right now is gonna come to an end one way or another

good, as they should

And down the slippery slope we go...

WHERE IS THE COMMON SENSE!!..COLLEGE SPORTS STUDENTS MUST EARN THE RIGHT TO GET TO THE PROS..THEY ARE IN COLLEGE TO GET EDUCATED AND GET IN THE PROS. THEN REAP THE REWARD OF HARD WORK..COLLEGE PROFITS SHOULD BE REGULATED AND USED FOR COMMUNITY STUFF...NOT GIVEN TO STUDENTS..

This will ruin college sports.

Hopefully it won’t hinder the recruiting and scholarships being given. It’s about time!

Time for student athletes to thrive. The NCAA has been too greedy for too long.

Now they'll raise tuition

it was about damn time. NCAA pay the students athletes

The ruling is the most significant involving antitrust laws and the athletic association to come from the Supreme Court in decades .

B_Craw4D About got darn time

Yes!!

A separate battle is playing out in state legislatures and on Capitol Hill over whether athletes can be compensated for use of their name , image and likeness .

Finally!!! The NCAA monopoly coming to an end.🙌

Good. Charge them tuition now!

Good!! Everybody getting paid but the players.

Colleges use athlete bodies to fund their revenue coffers. The students should be compensated unquestionably. Especially when athletes basically use up their peak physical health during those college years. Injury/exhaustion reduces their future abilities.

Damn! How many athletes have been discarded after an injury and just cast aside with no hope of success in life. While I am happy for this, feel horrible for those who are either dead or severely struggling.

This is good news for the average American taxpayer. The value of the athletes’ compensation is clearly taxable income.

DAMN! Tattoos aren’t cheap. Gold chains by the pound, aren’t cheap. Nice clothes, Nikes, aren’t cheap. FREE COLLEGE EDUCATION HAS NEVER BEEN SO WASTED AS IT IS WITH COLLEGE ATHLETES!!

The high court ruled unanimously in favor of the student - athletes ,with Justice Neil Gorusch delivering the opinion.

Students get paid for playing, then they don’t need to go to the school for free while others pay. I thought that was payment enough. College with no debt plus possible professionally playing sports after seems like a great trade off for playing a sport

A unanimous Supreme Court says student athletes could receive some education-related payments in a case that could reshape college sports by allowing more money from a billion-dollar industry to go to the players. Here's the opinion.

Finally, they are not the institution's slaves. NCAA

Supreme Court rules for student athletes in battle over NCAA limits on certain benefits .

seismic shift in 'amateur' athletics landscape

So it’s a bribe war now

I think they deserve it!😏👍 But some body can tills me what in the name of god inside brain 🧠 this guy ?!😳🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣

Finally, the NCAA will have to pony up for using and abusing student athletes

You should be allowed to make money off your name but this will get ugly for college sports

Definitely wish I could have got some compensation when I played. People told me I was fun to watch. I tore both my ACLs while working for my education, I know my teammates and I brought people to that gym.

It's about time

High court sides with former athletes in dispute with NCAAIn a ruling that could help push changes in college athletics, the Supreme Court on Monday unanimously sided with a group of former college athletes in a dispute with the NCAA over rules limiting certain compensation. The high court ruled that NCAA limits on the education-related benefits that colleges can offer athletes who play Division I basketball and football can't be enforced. Under current NCAA rules, students cannot be paid, and the scholarship money colleges can offer is capped at the cost of attending the school.

Supreme Court Signals Expansion of Religious Exemptions From LawsThree conservative justices argued that it was time to overrule a 1990 precedent holding that religious believers can’t invoke the First Amendment to exempt themselves from neutral laws that apply to the public at large I thought Pastafarians kind of put the kibosh on this sort of religion favoring foolishness. When given a Lemon Test you should make lemonade, not vinegar. Well we already live in a very liberal society where as a biological man can claim that he believes himself to be a woman, therefore it's ok for him to wear a dress and be referred to as a she, if this is acceptable surely religious conservative laws should be no objection?
