BREAKING: Supreme Court allows evictions to resume amid pandemic, blocking Biden administration from enforcing temporary ban.

FILE - In this Aug. 4, 2021, file photo, housing advocates protest on the eviction moratorium in New York. The Supreme Court is allowing evictions to resume across the United States, blocking the Biden administration from enforcing a temporary ban that was put in place because of the coronavirus pandemic. Roughly 3.5 million people in the United States said they faced eviction in the next two months, according to Census Bureau data from early August.

Roughly 3.5 million people in the United States said they faced eviction in the next two months, according to Census Bureau data from early August. The three liberal justices dissented. Justice Stephen Breyer, writing for the three, pointed to the increase in COVID-19 caused by the delta variant as one of the reasons the court should have left the moratorium in place. “The public interest strongly favors respecting the CDC’s judgment at this moment, when over 90% of counties are experiencing high transmission rates,” Breyer wrote.

The Treasury Department said Wednesday that the pace of distribution has increased and nearly a million households have been helped. But only about 11% of the money, just over $5 billion, has been distributed by state and local governments, the department said. But four conservative justices would have set the moratorium aside then and a fifth, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, said Congress would have to expressly authorize a new pause on evictions. Neither house of Congress has passed a new evictions moratorium.

But Friedrich said she was powerless to stop it because of an earlier ruling from the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., that sits above her. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit likewise refused to put the CDC order on hold, prompting the landlords’ emergency appeal to the Supreme Court.

PattyArquette Yes we want somebody else to pay our way to hell with the landlord who need the money to survive,When it’s their home they’re living in free, they’ve had free rent long enough it’s time to start taking responsibility you know their take a vantage of it

I don't think they understand the concept of justice, but what do I know... I love in the real world.

Are there any European countries taking in refugees? Plz man

What would happen if The Landlords end up with foreclosure and The Bank takes over. I wonder how The Bank handle this problem. 🤔

About time

Let me re-write you pro-Dem headline: BREAKING: Democrats were notified since June that a bill has to be passed instead of Presidential order. They failed to act.

Sorry your headline is wrong! “ Breaking Supreme courts stops unconstitutional orders from the Biden admin and tells congress to do its job” there fixed it for you!

WHATS OUR FUTURE?! Huh? NotMyPresident

Of course they would—they’re all sitting in kushy multi-million dollar houses paid for by the Koch’s & dark money. 🤷‍♀️

Imagine if they cancelled rent ages ago. People aren't behind because they didn't feel like paying rent. They were behind because everyone's lives were turned upside down by the pandemic. Evicting people for that is psychopathic

caroljsroth I am generally scared by this threat full of people who don't understand Capitalism or how the SCOTUS works. It is their job to decide if something is Constitutional. They weren't ruling on whether this right or wrong- they ruled that the CDC does not have the legal authority.

well raise my rent.......um and get hit by a bus

There should be evictions. If you’re renting and you do not pay the rent, you should have to leave the premises. Owners have bills to pay. Stop the welfare state and babying people. Our society is weak minded.

Was there a foreclosure ban while there was an eviction ban? I don’t believe there was and there is your real problem. You can’t have one without the other. The mortgage is expected to be paid no matter what.

It not a pandemic.

Good for them. Get a job.

Right decision, people are losing their lively hoods.

Landlords are cruel and the Supreme Court is not helpful

Good.

Dam they said times up mfs 👀

Huzzah! Sanity

Who’s paying for all those homeless people who’s credit is so bad they can’t get a new place if they tried POTUS ?

Pay your rent deadbeats

Just wait for it.. the mom and pop landlords go under and the huge conglomerates will get a bail out because they are 'too big to fail'.

What a mess this is going to be.

Plain and simple, the executive branch of the federal government does not have the authority to do ban evictions. What they did was illegal.

good news

We're open, get a job.

Burn the houses down.

Maybe point out that only Congress can pass laws and the ruling specifically called out that small little fact... Again

More homeless white repukians

TarheelKrystle Deceptive description from AP. Could have said SCOTUS said this required legislative action to enact or that even the Biden admin stated they thought this was illegal at first and then renewed it anyways.

Good

Good. Maybe now that people are in fear of losing their homes and are not getting ridiculously excessive unemployment benefits, they’ll go back to work.

Evict tenant, raise rent, new tenant- use aid money- till aid $ no longer available and market can no longer bear - crash from greed.

The gravy train has to end.

They love seeing people going homeless smfh

Murderer and 'Repuglick'n ' are synonymns.

Biden started the evictions lol

Get a fucking job

The Pro Life Supreme Court? I wish they could all be homeless for a week.

I think there is a solution that doesn’t put the entire burden on landlords who are also experiencing the same pandemic.

Lots of jobs out there. Go to work. Pay your rent. Free ride is over. Property owners have mortgages, taxes and upkeep to pay.

Remember; SCOTUS said they wouldn’t uphold this and Dem leadership are more afraid of Manchin, Sinema (sic) than millions of homeless people. Stop being duped

I think you misspelled “unconstitutional”

I always thought I was conservative but am opposed to this. Yes I pay my rent. We will have to come up with other housing solutions for people because we will have another crisis. People are actually really struggling and aren’t the greedy, lazy, a holes that some think they are.

My Coworker died 2 weeks ago after being on a ventilator, he’s been off work 3 weeks, his Wife now has Covid in the Hospital. There are no Funeral arrangements and now shit like this. I wonder what’s going to happen with their Family when she gets home if she does.🙏🏾

Go get a job jobs are hiring

The taxpayers have been giving them money to pay their rent. If they still refused to pay their rent, they deserve to be evicted. These people act like the government owns these houses and apartments. NO! A person does. Who is protecting him?!

One day all might make it for all feasible to afford a roof over their head!

The USA is toast

Asked his reaction, Justice Breyer said, “This is a very sad moment for millions of desperate people, and it will get much, MUCH, worse when Trump or DeSantis replaces me, but, hey, it’s way better than me retiring at 83 and possibly being slightly bored.”

Good. The moratorium should never have been issued by the CDC, especially after Kavanaug noted it shld not be upheld. Biden and the CDC openly flouted the attempt to be compassionate by SCOTUS, and have been correctly smacked down. LLs rightfully challenged this property theft.

LESSSS GOOOO

About time! Get back to work people!

Way to many places needing help for people to still worry about getting evicted.

SCOTUS are the ONLY federal judges who ARE NOT required to file FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES. My question is: Do any have investments in or personally manage rental properties? Shouldn't we know if some have non-legit motives or at least rule that out?

It's out of Biden's hands now I guess

Finally, the madness is ending! People, go get an f'ing job and pay your damn bills. No one is responsible for your life but you!

Everyone complaining in these comments haven't been paying rent and are now crying they have to return stolen goods.

Go to work and pay your rent

Time to quit hiding and go to work!

Thank god. There’s A huge labor shortage and these people have been receiving free money for a year and half. Its enough already.

Finally I kept paying my mortgage. Why can’t people pay there rent during a pandemic? Is it because of the banking lobbying and donations? I don’t know my name is just John Q Public.

Shame on … the title should read Congress failed to protect constituents therefore SCOTUS is forced to allow evictions. We don’t make laws from the bench. This headline is misleading, or did you skip Civics in school?

Businesses are begging people to work; there is no shortage of jobs to pay for one’s roof over his/her head. The landlord has bills to pay too. It is time.

Get back to work and pay your damn rent. Gravy train is over. 🚂

The court hands a major loss to Biden administration BUT puts the issue in lap of Congress, writing: “If a federally imposed eviction moratorium is to continue, Congress must specifically authorize it.”

Why didn’t congress take action on this before the first time it ended? Then did nothing the second time. Why have only a fraction of the funds for this been distributed?

DeoneBe SCOTUS the official mouthpiece of Leonard Leo and the Federalist Society

Should Supreme Court decide where it runs contrary to the will of the people or should the executive enforce the ban and refuse to acknowledge the Courts decision?

Wtf

this is why we need the 4th stimulus package now!!!

There billions in rent assistance just sitting in states that havent been used.

Gross

No Rent=Squatters! Oh ok.

If y’all are for keeping the moratoriums in place then you need to keep that energy for the people having to pay mortgages. If I still have to pay mortgages on my 15 apartment building then they still have to pay rent. Period. If they don’t then I shouldn’t.

Yes start putting these low life’s out of other peoples property

This was bound to happen. Reports were that congress had to enact the moratorium. Biden told Pelosi to get on it, and she told Biden to do it. So he did, knowing this would happen.

The tears on this thread make my dick so fucking hard

Pandemic + Evicted + Homeless + Hungry + Angry = Revolution

Well the republican supreme court just put the pandemic and strain on healthcare back into overdrive here. Great…. 😑

Lol, they’ve literally been printing money, if ppl decides flexing on IG was more important than paying their rent, well…

Oh this is gonna end well…

Ok 🤷‍♂️

the pandemic is OVER. This thing is endemic. It’s never going away.

Americans get tossed to the curb, while America rolls out the red carpet for Afghanistan! This is on huge shit show. What happened to the country I loved, the country I taught my children to respect? Nothing left to believe in! Covid is the only hope!

Slum lord Jared paid a lot for that decision!

MILLIONS!! MILLIONS WILL BE HOMELESS!! We are witnessing the dismantling of America before our very eyes.

Bruh

Where are the people who said that the Supreme Court doesn't matter?

Disgusting

I have mixed feelings about this. I have read of so many small landlords eating their shirts.

It begins

Instead of grandstanding the politicians could’ve done their jobs and wrote a relief bill for landlords. Now evictions are about to be all over the place

But i spent September rent on a cruise already 😉

Extremely stupid decision during their rising numbers. The judges will be held accountable for what happens. While law must be maintained a virus won't care re their political stance.

Don't break the law to control the market.

I’m going to get slaughtered for this. In my town rental prices have gone up $400-500/month. I’ve been trying to move out from a slum landlord, but there is nothing available and what does open is so wildly overpriced it’s obscene. This needs to happen, for so many people.

Joe knew the answer when he violated the constitution. Without congressional approval he knew he was F*****

I don't think most of you understand how an economy works... the middle class is the lifeblood of this country, if you keep cheering them on to destroy the middle class, we are left with the ultra rich and the poor. We are already well on our way to that happening.

I sense an “ let them eat cake” uprising if Dems aren’t able to beat down the callous GQP, the people just might.

YES!!! YEAH BABY!!! TAKE THAT!!!... YES YES YES!!!! Get a job moochers!!!! Time to PAY YOUR FUCKING RENT LIKE AN ADULT!!!!

about time - thank god I'm not a landlord anymore

Imagine how heartless you have to be to do this shit as the pandemic ramps back up.

Where are those squad assholes now🦗🦗🦗🦗

Of course they did as they sit behind their privileged black gowns 😡

12 dead marines and one corpsman - and he blames Trump - pray for them and thank all who voted for him

This is exactly the shit I'm talking about. So people are going to be out on the street and Airbnb is giving 20,000 homes to people that DON'T LIVE HERE. WE HAVE SERIOUS PROBLEMS IN THIS COUNTRY.

All these poor landlords and homeowners... your free ride is done. Jobs have been available to pay rent for awhile... let alone all the stipends that when to 75” TVs instead.

It’s time to get your ass off the couch and go find a job

What’s unfortunate is there are a substantial number of families that just stopped paying landlords. They had the money but used it elsewhere. Some families did need an extension but it was always a means to an end.

homelessness is a fundamental human right?

amid pandemic Lmaooo there’s no pandemic anymore. If you’re vaccinated you’re not at risk.

Phuck the SCotus

Allr owners of these properties that have to pay their mortgage, pandemic or not, say thank you.

Taliban evict our troops in broad daylight, the Biden folks lacked defenses before scotus the same couldn't happen here

Good I’m ready to buy a house..

If you lived in Seattle and stopped paying rent at the beginning of the pandemic and you still kept your job you would most likely have enough to buy a house right now

WTF is the Supreme Court now running the country They never interfered with trump and what he did to the country this is not American

this is extremely bad news for millions of people facing imminent homelessness

遇见你是我的缘分dd5201314

Finally landlords will be able to rent to paying tenets! 🙌 y'all shouldn't have blown this stimulus and unemployment checks

Shame on them!

It’s time. Get vaccinated and get a job.

Cruelty seems to be infecting our judiciary.

RECESSION HERE WE COME

MikaOwls Hurt people Hurt people. Who are these Hurt people gonna Hurt in a few days when rent is due?

Good. WTH have the landlords been doing all this time? Evictions need to resume. It's about time.

💔💔💔

Welcome to CAMP SCOTUS What happens when schools are forced to shut down again next week? We are still in the midst of a national emergency This ruling will turn every town square into a COVID infested tent city. washingtonpost CREWcrew HouseJudiciary

Clock is ticking. Shit is about to get really, really real.

Just ignore the SCOTUS. It is a lawless organization. FDR did do it. It can be done again. Just ignore it. Their words are meaningsless.

good pay your rent. the people who actually own the build are paying for you bums

pls tell the pino's in congress that executor orders and administrative actions are vulnerable to being overturned by judicial rulings so they have to pass laws themselves 👀

As we have minimum age requirements to serve in Congress & Presidency- we should have maximum age & it should cover all three branches.

not good.

The government has enough money to pay all the back rent, the current rent due, and future rent. The state and federal governments should pay the rents.

So beyond the monstrous cruelty of this step it makes terrible economic sense to me. Like I unironically think that a debt jubilee or a partial debt jubilee or something is the correct way to handle the current crisis to keep the economy going. Not ending the moratorium.

BREAKING: Supreme Court allows sales of greasy tamales to resume amid pandemic, blocking Biden administration from enforcing ban on greasy tamales.

The Supreme Court doesn’t “allow” evictions. They are not a authoritative leader. They came to a census where these mandates aren’t necessary with a fully open economy.

It’s not as if Congress could do something about it .... oh, wait, my bad

Timely decision. Supreme court gives no fucks about the soldiers

Lots of jobs out there quit being bums

Impeach SCOTUS. They’re going to create more homelessness. Of the top 5 most homeless cities in the world, US has two cities (New York and California) on the top 5 list. And we’re supposed to be one of the richest nations in the world.

So people have to lose their homes over a pandemic that we had no control over but yall can bring Afghanistan refugees over and house them.

Get a job!

I cant drive 1 block without seeing a help wanted sign jobs are out there people are just too lazy

I feel bad for the renters but owners have mortgages, taxes and repairs on their property. The government should expand section 8 if they really want to help.

Eat your landlord

With the infrastructure bill still not passed & now the SCOTUS blocking on the eviction moratorium, it’s going to b hard for Congress to agree to pass both bills in the next 2 months!! Not looking good at all!!

Good ruling. Renters should be paying their rent. Owners still have to pay their mortgages and taxes.

what a fucking world where not letting people get kicked to the curb is deemed 'unconstitutional'

Conservatism is a death cult.

but why is ron jeremy raising placard?

About time the Supreme Court started doing their job.

The far-right SCOTUS majority has in the last two days: •resurrected a cruel Trump immigration policy that ended 17 months ago •put 11 million people at risk of eviction during a pandemic We must expand the Court.

And THAT'S why the demand should pack the court.

“Cancel Rent” Seriously wtf!

Common sense

CKeirns This is getting old. People need to make a living and by renting their house/apt, that is paying their bills. We have been back to work for a while now and people need to get off their asses and start paying their way!

profmusgrave Wait. So now. All of a sudden. EO are illegal. Convenient. Cool….

So is Breyer gonna retire or nah

I'm beginning to think our President can't get anything right.

Well that’s cool. Send these privigled, elected folks to the streets and see how they like it. Or, better yet, send their salary and benefits to the people they’re hurting.

The government has no right to take total control of private property. If you allow this, you may not agree with there reason to do it next time, but you will be powerless to stop it.

Yes!!!!! Love it!

That's what 6-3 republican judges will get u

docrocktex26 Welp, a lot of Biden voters will get thrown out in the street also. Who will they blame? Biden should use an EO.

people need to pay up

Disgusting

😭

docrocktex26 What do you want to bet that Florida will be the first place that initiates the evictions?

“Pro life”

You mean...property owners have rights? Who knew!

So after ppl got blown up today and thr pandemic still raging the supreme court decided it was going to do this now?

This is dumb. ExpandTheCourt
