Full-time YouTuber Payton Moore caught a huge 300-pound alligator gar in a Houston bayou,...

YouTuber and wildlife conservationist Payton Moore caught an alligator gar that was over 8 feet long in one of Houston's waterways. The Sugar Land resident set sail down a Houston bayou Thursday, determined to catch one of the largest alligator gars Texas has potentially ever seen.

The moment the fish started moving, Moore could tell he'd found a giant."It felt like somebody's car had just started up and was rolling out of the driveway, and I'm hanging on to the end of it," When the opportunity presented itself, Moore used a lasso to wrangle the gar and secure it around its pectoral fins.

"It's very likely there are alligator gar out there that are over 100 years old," David said."You're looking at well over half a century for a lot of these large alligator gar."Moore has been passionate about protecting animals since he was 6 years old, when he watched a VHS tape of"The Crocodile Hunter" and decided he wanted to be just like Steve Irwin."Pretty much anybody who does what I do is just trying to imitate in some capacity," he said.

Now Moore primarily fishes in the waterways in and around Houston, but sometimes films out of state or on the Gulf Coast. He makes a point to talk about proper modern fishing techniques and ways in which not to harm or kill wildlife. Some of the biggest threats to their survival involve habitat loss, specifically when dams or levees separate large rivers from floodplains, which serve as the fish's nursery areas and spawning grounds
