If you find yourself eating too much added sugar and unhealthy fats, it might be because you're not getting enough sleep, according to a study published Monday in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Researchers from Columbia University's Irving Medical Center examined the associations between measures of sleep quality and the dietary patterns of nearly 500 women who participated in the AHA Go Red for Women program, a year-long study of sleep patterns and cardiovascular risk in women. What they found was that the poorer their quality of sleep, and the less they slept, the more the women consumed added sugars, saturated fats and caffeine.

Foods that are lower in calories but still satiating because of their fiber content or macronutrient levels include fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes, lean meats, fatty fish and healthy fats. "Sleep isn't a luxury. It's a fundamental human need and part of a healthy lifestyle," said Adam.

There are studies pointibg out that the brain consumes itself when having not enough sleep. Not sure if this was about proteins or carbohydrates.

A study showed the more women went to the supermarket and purchased coffee, cookies, sweets and candies the more the women consumed added sugars, saturated fats and caffeine. Oddly enough, it happens to men too.

Yes but we could then say it is b/c they consume these things that they have poorer sleep quality so the correlation may be spurious based on what they are measuring the variables against.

It would also help if food packagers didn’t add sugar to so many things. Even if you give up sugar consciously, it’s hiding in salad dressing, canned products, baked savory items (vs baked sweet items). It’s crazy how much is in unexpected things.

I can attest to this. Then I learned how to manage by simply switching products by their ingredients but could still give off the sweetness I was looking for. Low sugar count is essential. Exercise is even more important and beneficial by releasing bad calorie intake.
