U.S. retailers are expected to usher in the unofficial start to the holiday shopping season with bigger crowds than last year in a closer step toward normalcy. But the fallout from the pandemic could make for a less festive mood.

FILE - Black Friday shoppers wear face masks and gloves during the coronavirus pandemic as they leave the Uniqlo store along Fifth Avenue, Friday, Nov. 27, 2020, in New York. Retailers are expected to usher in the unofficial start to the holiday shopping season Friday, Nov. 26, 2021, with bigger crowds than last year in a closer step toward normalcy. But the fallout from the pandemic continues to weigh on businesses and shoppers' minds.

Buoyed by solid hiring, healthy pay gains and substantial savings, customers are returning to stores and splurging on all types of items. But the spike has also resulted in limited selection across the board as suppliers and retailers have been caught flat-footed. Shoppers are expected to pay on average of between 5% to 17% more for toys, clothing, appliances, TVs and others purchases on Black Friday this year compared with last year, according to Aurelien Duthoit, senior sector advisor at Allianz Research. TVs will see the highest price hike on average, up 17% from a year ago, according to the research firm. That’s because whatever discounts available will be applied to goods that are already expensive.

The pandemic further diminished the importance of the Black Friday event, though some experts still believe it will again be the busiest day of the year. Last year, retailers started to offer the big holiday sales earlier in October in an effort to spread out shopping for safety reasons and to smooth out online shipping peaks. They also got rid of the Thanksgiving Day in-store shopping event and pushed all their discounts online.

When you want to cheerily hype up things being business as usual, but need to leave yourself an out, for when our dollars reflect we are over this shit.

“closer step toward normalcy”? LOL. Only if “normalcy” is buying as much useless junk as possible to fill the void. Corporate marketing is God !

I can assure you everyone is out shopping 🛍 with a 😷 and they don’t even care. They got used to it.

Imagine being in an industry that revels and rejoices out of depressing people - that’s msm for you.

Not smart. B11529

Do Americans really actually do early bird 4am Black Friday crap anymore? The past few years they’ve barely had any decent sales, & definitely nothing worth getting up early for.

And a new variant will make this so much fun.

this is terrible news

Target to keep stores closed on Thanksgiving for good | AP NewsNEW YORK (AP) — Target will no longer open its stores on Thanksgiving Day, making permanent a shift to the unofficial start of the holiday season that was suspended during the pandemic. To limit crowds in stores, retailers last year were forced to turn what had become a weekend shopping blitz into an extended event, with big holiday discounts beginning as early as October. Kudos to Target and all the other stores that have also announced closure on Thanksgiving, 👍 Is that news Nearly every store always remained closed on Thanksgiving, sans supermarket/convenience store/gas station. Stores staying closed on Thanksgiving is normal. Only in past couple years a few opened on Thanksgiving, but rare. Why is a store closed on Thanksgiving news? I think all retailers should be closed!
