'Perhaps people are so invested in the idea that mental illness could not be at play in the Uvalde, Texas, shooting because they simply want to keep the focus on gun control, where (I agree) it belongs,' writes Freddie DeBoer.

immediate aftermath of these tragedies

, with a vast majority of the tweets I’ve seen explicitly avowing that this shooting could never have been the product of insanity.considering the link between mental health and mass shootings, Quentin Fottrell of Marketwatch echoed a common sentiment, saying, “Bluntly linking mental health to gun violence can stigmatize the former.” Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut was more direct and less equivocal. “Spare me the bullshit of mental illness,”, echoing a fair swath of liberal opinion.

It was later revealed that as a grad student at the University of Colorado, Holmes had been flagged by both students and staff as suffering from mental illness and potentially dangerous. In fact, Holmes had gone so far as tobefore his attack, seeking help, but said he was disconnected after only nine seconds.

Holmes’ not guilty by reason of insanity plea was rejected by the jury, who found him guilty of hundreds of counts of murder and attempted murder, ensuring he would spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security prison rather than in a mental health facility. Prosecutors pushed for the death penalty, but Holmes’ life was spared, who said explicitly that they were not willing to sentence someone who was obviously deeply mentally ill to death.

An uglier potential reason is that these people support the mentally ill only as far as they can maintain a vision of them as entirely pure and blameless; their antipathy to “ableism” extends only so far as they are never put into a position where they must sympathize with people who have committed heinous acts. But this is no support at all.

Voodooqueen6 Duh. So definitely ban those types of weapons, especially for anyone under 18

Technically, no one in their 'right mind' does something like this. The problem is the process of radicalization that gets them to that point, and placing a clinical term on the individual.

What is the point, and who is 'pretending' the killer was mentally healthy? Reinstitute the assault weapons and high capacity magazine ban. Expand background checks.

pianotinkler There’s a difference between the danger to society posed by a mentally ill person (almost none) and a mentally ill person with access to firearms (a whole lot). Every country in the world has mentally ill people. We’re the only country with an epidemic of mass shootings.

It just doesn't matter. Mentally ill people exist all over the world. Evil intentioned people exist all over the world. Only America has a huge mass murder problem.

Of course they can be, thus we go right back to the insanity of a society that doesn’t properly regulate GUNS

No one is denying this can be a factor, same as no one is denying you're a shill for the far right.

Who the fuck is denying this? No one. It’s the goddam guns that kill. That’s why it seeing happen in other countries that have the same mental illness.

Nobody is denying school shooters can be mentally ill, but people are not more or less mentally ill than in the rest of the world. The difference between the US and the rest of the world is the ease of access to military grade assault rifles and ammo. Write a story about that.

And the biggest factor in mental illness just after genetics is coming from a single mother home. But we don't like to talk about that fact.

Off course mental illness is a factor, … all over the US

It's also foolish and unhelpful to pretend Republican ideology and Fox news don't cause mental illness

WTAF 🤬

Mental illness is a given if someone decides to deal with their problems by shooting some kids. It's also beside the point. Society is creating the mental illness and society is giving the illness the means to express itself in this way. Deal with the root of the problem

If only it wasn't so easy for people with undiagnosed mental issues to be able to obtain weapons of war...

No one denies it. We want gun background checks to include mental health in authorizing ownership.

uhhh....pretty sure nobody is denying mental illness could play into things, just saying the assault gun doesn't need to be readily available

That doesn't bring all those children back.

Who is pretending mental illness doesn’t factor into senseless violence? In fact it’s agreed one needs to be mentally ill to think purchasing an assault rifle and shooting up a school/church/synagogue/concert supermarket/movie theater/subway car/ is a sane act. So now what?

To shoot multiple ppl up close w/ AR15, of course something is wrong. Mental illness is not uniquely US problem. Not all ppl who struggle with mental illness are dangerous. +GOP will not vote to expand healthcare for mental illness. +It’s the access to guns.

What about brain washing online?

No one denies it. Don’t even try this. But unharmed mental illness is less dangerous. And think about how different the scenario would be if, along with not placing weapons in their hands, they could be provided with healthcare

I agree. That includes mentally ill law makers! Power can infect the human mind in terrible ways, rendering people selfish and callous. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump seem to suffer from this affliction

Only Americans who are mentally ill would show their illness, by buying assault rifles, choose locations then kill innocent citizens to prove it. In Gun We Trust!!!

Literally no one is denying this

Clearly they are mentally ill. The issue is that anyone can easily get military grade assault weapons.

Anyone that takes a gun and mowes down innocent people is mentally ill.

They're also almost all personality disorders which are absurdly hard to treat and require the full investment of the patient. Which is tough when the misogyny that characterizes so many of them is so widely validated in our society.

All the more reason to create hurdles especially age requirements, restrict gun and ammunition purchases, and develop mental health evaluations to impede troubled young men from getting assault weapons.

Why would you let mentally ill teenagers easily buy mass-murder weapons & lots of cheap ammo?

No one is pretending they're not but there are mentally ill people everywhere in the world and only mass shootings to this degree in America. Hmm.. i wonder what the difference is?🤔

Literally not a single person denied that! It has been always how easy to a mentally unstable person to buy a weapon of war on an impulse, like, say, a disturbed kid who waited till his 18th BD to buy them with thousands of bullets on the same day. That is the real matter,

Mental illness can but almost 50% of American deals with mental health issues at some point in their life. Need to be careful to not stigmatize mental health treatment. Most people with mental illness aren’t violent.

Mental illness didn't mow down those innocent school children. High powered assault rifle with high capacity magazines did.

no shit?

Nobody denies that aspect. We’re just tired of it being touted as the **only** reason.

Well, they’re certainly not mentally healthy.

Who’s saying that? No one is saying that? What the fuck, y’all.

Mental Illness™ is only a marketing brand for psychiatry which is dying for lack of evidentiary support. It has no wider utility.

Finally some sense from the Daily Beast!

We don’t have a monopoly on mental illness. Other countries have the same issues. Difference is, we have guns and, not only do we have guns, we make it very very easy for anyone to buy them.
