More people are being asked to collect their own samples at coronavirus testing sites. It's raising questions about whether it's being done correctly and if the rush to expand testing has pushed through methods that may not be sound. (WBEZ)

Rogelio V. Solis/Associated PressA few weeks ago, Perry, who lives in Chicago's northwest suburbs, started feeling symptoms of what he thought was COVID-19. The 64-year-old and his wife drove from their house to Waukegan to get tested.

"[He said] that my results were worthless based on his experience and knowledge of how the test should be done," he said.Perry and his wife tested negative, but they didn't know if they could trust the results, so they decided to self-quarantine for 14 days. Emily Landon, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Chicago, said she and her team had conducted previous studies that show people can reliably test themselves. She said she expects self-swabbing to become more widespread. It's not only more efficient, but it could be safer for health care workers.

As for why self-testing is allowed now, when it was done only by health care professionals at the start of the pandemic, Landon said this is a routine evolution in how scientists approach new diseases. When there's a new virus, Landon said guidelines always start out especially conservative. For example, doctors testing for COVID-19 used to collect multiple nose and throat swabs, but also blood and urine samples. As doctors learned more, that changed.

Information is changing quickly and neither study has been peer reviewed yet, key for acceptance in the scientific community. While these early studies show promise, there still isn't enough data or information to say with certainty the best test or testing method.

WBEZ People cannot swab themselves. Ask any lab person, assistant, etc. For goodness' sake.

WBEZ Well, we've lived for a long time with NPR and their unsound reporting methods...this too shall pass.

WBEZ Narrator: they were not done correctly

WBEZ You know where you can stick the swab...and twirl it. That's right.

WBEZ I had to do this. I sneezed 5 or 6 times and it was so awkward and painful! 🤦🏻‍♀️

WBEZ I did my own test. Stuck swab up there 1 1/2 myself. Checker said good enough. Results back. Negative.

WBEZ DNA collect really

WBEZ I'm busy that day. . .

WBEZ The only accurate test for coronavirus is to: 1. Close your eyes 2. Spin around 9 times COUNTERCLOCKWISE 3. Stick a Qtip in your ear, then stick it in your mouth If you cough or open your eyes, you have coronavirus. The cure is mail-in voting democrat three times.

WBEZ Two friends, who took their own swabs, had to repeat the process.

WBEZ You keep using the word “uncomfortable” to describe the nasopharyngeal test, but I’ve had it done twice and both were straight up painful. Very painful.

WBEZ Had the test done. I would not be able to administer it to myself due to the instinctual response to pull the swab out of my nose the second it touches the membrane necessary to get a reliable sample. I doubt many other people would be able to, either. It's very uncomfortable.

WBEZ Yes. The testing is flawed. We have been lied too since the beginning. The suffering is off the charts. End the lockdowns. Stop pushing a goddam vaccine. Stop this madness!!! Ethics
