The guitarist for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band found a second act as a star of ‘The Sopranos.’

Sept. 17, 2021 12:26 pm ET“I think every good artist eventually asks themselves if they are being useful,” says Steven Van Zandt, who has been the indispensable consigliere for two of the greatest bosses in American culture: Bruce Springsteen and Tony Soprano. In “Unrequited Infatuations,” a new memoir coming out Sept. 28, Mr. Van Zandt recounts his extraordinary journey from playing guitar in Mr. Springsteein’s E Street Band to playing gangster Silvio Dante in the classic HBO series “The Sopranos,” as well as his work as a writer, activist and arts advocate.

The book is an insightful look at the creative process, filled with the kind of honest insights that have made Mr. Van Zandt invaluable to Mr. Springsteen almost from the moment they met as teenagers at a Jersey Shore battle of the bands in 1965. “It was educational for me to go back through my own history and put things into perspective,” he says from behind a console at his Manhattan recording studio. “Most of the time my only concern was just making great records. Bruce was always thinking deeper.”
