The opportunity to win lucrative sums of cash—sometimes millions of dollars—in exchange for getting a Covid-19 shot was not effective at boosting vaccination rates across the U.S., according to research published inMonday, bolstering previous research on the failed incentives and backing researchers’ calls to explore wiser ways of spending public funds to improve vaccine uptake. ... [+]There is no evidence statewide vaccine lottery incentive programs in the U.S.

The peer reviewed study compared the rate of people getting their first shot in 15 states that ran lottery programs and 31 states not running programs, before and after the lottery was announced. There was no significant difference in overall vaccination levels or the rate of vaccine uptake between lottery and non-lottery states, the researchers wrote.

While the researchers acknowledge the study relies heavily on CDC data and may not be able to rule out “small to moderate increases in vaccination rate” spurred by the lottery, they said the findings are in line with otherThe researchers called for more research on ways of encouraging people to get vaccinated in light of the apparently tepid impact lotteries have. Amid flagging vaccination rates, many states tried to incentivize people to get a Covid shot.
