A working group of Texas educators sent an advisory proposal to the Texas State Board of Education suggesting that slavery be taught to second graders as “involuntary relocation.” The board told the group to revisit the proposal’s language.

, Texas’ law that dictates how slavery and issues of race are taught in Texas. The law states that slavery can’t be taught as part of the true founding of the United States and that slavery was nothing more than a deviation from American values.

Ellis’ statement pointed out that slavery is currently not included in social studies instruction to second graders. Stephanie Alvarez, a professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and a member of the group, said she was did not attend the meetings when the language was crafted because of personal issues, but that the language was “extremely disturbing.” She would not comment any further because of her role in the work group, she said.

Annette Gordon-Reed, a history professor at Harvard University, said using “involuntary relocation” to describe slavery threatens to blur out what actually occurred during that time in history. There is no reason to use the proposed language, she said.

ksatnews 'Slavery' immoral, social/economic construct going back thousands of years. Even today, learned scholars can't agree on it's various elements and yet it is a subject for 2nd graders? Maybe graduate school, but 2nd graders? Why? What 7 y/o does 'involuntary relocation'

They’ve got to be kidding. “Involuntary relocation” is what the American government did to the Japanese-Americans during WWII when it illegally interred them against their civil rights. Slavery is slavery. Second graders need to know that it’s not right to treat people like that.

Slavery is Slavery no matter what age it’s taught. Stop trying to dumb down children to become deplorables and follow:

Unbelievable … how these people yearn so for power.🙄

Call it exactly what it was.....don't try to sugar coat it.

This was a bad idea… but it was a reaction to 50 years of massive leftist distortion in the teaching of the history of slavery… slavery has existed for all 5,000 years of human history, but many US students think it only existed in the Southern US… that needs to be fixed…

For the love of all that is holy, can we please let our children be children 🙏🏼 2nd graders are too young. They’re still learning how to read & write. C’mon.

Wtf

GTFO 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Proposal to teach slavery as 'involuntary relocation' sent to Texas education boardPublic schools in Texas would describe slavery to second graders as 'involuntary relocation' under new social studies standards proposed to the state’s education board. Racist don’t want to hear the truth How about we change the name of 'Texas' to 'Cowplop?' Involuntary relocation is taking someone by force & putting them somewhere they didn't want to. Once there, it was 'involuntary servitude!' Don't forget the rest of it Texas! Such disrespect to African-Americans!

Some Texas schools may describe slavery as ‘involuntary relocation’Texas’ public education system has become heavily politicized in recent years, with lawmakers passing legislation to dictate how race and slavery should be taught in schools. I imagine they will do the same for the holocaust. “The board is considering curriculum changes one year after Texas passed a law to eliminate topics from schools that make students “feel discomfort.” Math and chemistry and English makes many students feel discomfort … IF we could ask 100 slaves to describe it, how many would see it as JUST 'involuntary relocation?' The discomfort one feels at hearing about slavery is no comparison to the actual discomfort that was slavery.
