Reacting to the Uvalde school shooting earlier in the day, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr makes a statement before his team faced the Mavericks in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday, May 24, 2022, in Dallas.Current and former Spurs moved swiftly in the wake of the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde to offer their condolences to the victims’ families and express outrage at the nation’s latest horrific act of gun violence.
The massacre ended when law enforcement officers broke into the classroom and killed Ramos, who used an AR-style rifle to gun down the children and their teachers. The Uvalde massacre was the deadliest U.S. school shooting since a man killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012. It also came just 10 days since a racially motivated shooting by another 18-year-old man at a Buffalo grocery store killed 10 people.“As I wake up to pray, my heart is broken for the losses of my fellow Texans in Uvalde,” Spurs Hall of Famer David Robinson tweeted. “I pray that those families would find their strength in Christ.
Kerr’s father was killed by gunmen in Lebanon in 1984. An outspoken proponent of efforts to curb gun violence, Kerr said 90 percent of the U.S. public currently support requiring universal background checks, a claim that National Public Radio reported has been verified by fact-checkers. “So, I’m fed up. I’ve had enough. We’re going to play the game tonight. But I want every person here, every person listening to this to think about your own child or grandchild or mother or father, sister, brother. How would you feel if this happened to you today?”“We can’t sit here and just read about it and go, well, let’s have a moment of silence, , ‘Yeah, Go Dubs . Come on, Mavs, let’s go.’ That’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to go play a basketball game.
