Courtesy of Spring ISD, PhotographerThroughout his life, Jorge Enrique Pereira Martinez’s family struggled financially — at times, barely surviving off his mother’s paychecks. However, his experience with economic disparity has become motivation to aid underserved communities battling poverty.
Pereira Martinez walked the stage at graduation on Thursday, May 26, at Spring ISD’s Planet Ford Stadium.“It feels super surreal just to be here,” he said. “I didn’t think this was ever going to happen; looking back, it just happened so quick. I’m proud of how these four years have really shaped me to the person I am today.”
“Whilst in college, I will advocate for more educational opportunities and resources to ensure everyone’s experience can be met with excellence and equality, regardless of financial circumstances,” he said. “There were various instances, and it slowly took me some time to realize what was occurring,” Pereira Martinez said. “During that time, it was very devastating for me because every child would want their parents to come and see them but at the same time, I understood that in order to have out basic necessities that was a priority.”
