NEW: Two astronauts aboard a SpaceX capsule have splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico after returning from the International Space Station. It’s a milestone for SpaceX, the first private company to send people to the station.

The company has been taking cargo to and from the station for years. This flight with people on board was the final test for SpaceX's crew system to be certified by NASA as"operational" for future astronaut missions.

people had been launched to orbit from U.S. soil in almost a decade, and they spent two months living and working on board the station.undocked from the station Meanwhile, at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif., mission controllers wore masks at their workstations, due to COVID-19. Thank you SpaceX!!!!

👍🏻

You realize nearly every other system NASA has use to sent people to space was built by private contractors, right?

Apollo used 3 parachutes for landing & splashdown speed was 28ft/sec=19 miles/hr. SpaceX with 4 parachutes has reduced the splashdown speed to 15 miles/hr. Some Apollo used 2 chutes at 32ft/sec.

👍🏻

Make a SpaceX Mayflower and lose some Karens in space.

Fuck that

I hope they didn't bring a space virus back.

Frustrating to watch and wait, wait and wait for these two astronaut s to step OFF OF THE DRAGON capsule....? Ugh!!!!!!

OJ died on capricorn one

It was a gorgeous view of splashdown! Congratulations to SpaceX, NASA, AstroBehnken, and Astro_Doug for their hard work on the mission! Side note, those people in their personal boats really need to be fined. Their decision to go out to the splashdown site was foolish.

Ah, great...now taking private enterprise and all the greed, corruption and mayhem it beings with it and propelling it into space.

This is great! They missed oil rigs, bridges, tankers, etc.

They should keep on their gear- it’ll probably be compulsory soon.

Why the hell is there a boat at the site flying a 'Trump' flag? What kind of security do they have?

And Florida Man was there with beers and Idiocoracy.

These TrumpBoaters with their flags interfering with the recovery of Dragon is ridiculous. God they really have no compunction to leave things alone

How cool is that? Space is becoming more accessible, cheaper, safer.

Splashdown👏😻 It’s reassuring to see that mankind can really work together for common goals. Don't you think it's time to be celebrated at the highest level Nobel4ISS? Let's share the message of Hope especially in these times Look Up

Watching Spacex return to earth splash down. A private boat with a trump flag just went right by the capsule! WTF? Who let this happen? This should not be a campaign moment!!!

Fabulous sight. Now THAT was cool.
