Before Summer Ends, Consider a Brief Fling With Spiked Seltzer
Try the drink of summer 2019 before it's no longer fun.By Aug 14, 2019 Yousra Attia Quick, where were you when you first realized spiked seltzer had become a thing? For me it was Fourth of July weekend, with my family in the Poconos. I’d noticed the preppy, slender cans of Bon and Viv lurking in Brooklyn delis all spring and spotted White Claws in friends’ beach-day Instagram stories, captioned with the early adopter’s tentative thrill, “These are actually kind of good?” But it wasn’t until my brother—a trend-immune whiskey-drinker with zero social media presence—mentioned he’d taken to drinking a cranberry spiked seltzer after work, that I felt compelled to I drive 20 miles to a rural Pennsylvania beer distributor and buy a case. Spiked seltzer is the latest in a line of alcoholic beverages associated with summer thanks to aggressive marketing. Its forebears include the Aperol spritz, with its vague European heritage, Bud Light Lime-A-Rita—cheap, convenient, popsicle-like—and Four Loko, the chaotic evil malt beverage/energy drink. Before that people got Smirnoff Iced, though much of the Facebook evidence has since been set to private. What makes spiked seltzer so 2019 is its bald appeal to our love of trendy sparkling waters . My first taste of the it-beverage was Bon and Viv's pear elderflower, which tastes like a cheap Spindrift or an expensive LaCroix—like the kind of whatever-flavored seltzer you take from the cooler when you’re not having a drink. Which is sort of the point? Many spiked seltzer brands have no more than 100 calories a can and a scant few grams of carbs and sugar; it is a drink for people who track their macros. But unlike the beer brands bending over backwards to clear the same nutritional limbo bar (Michelob Ultra, Corona Premier, Budweiser Select), spiked seltzer isn’t"diet." It's not a lesser alternative to the drink your friends—or your bros—might prefer. Read more: ELLE Magazine (US)
