South Korea says it will launch a task force to consider outlawing dog meat consumption after the country’s president offered to look into ending the centuries-old practice.

The Associated Pressdog

In a statement, seven government offices including the Agriculture Ministry said they decided to launch the group comprising officials, civilian experts and people from related organizations to deliver recommendations on possibly outlawing dog meat consumption. It said authorities will gather information on dog farms, restaurants and other facilities while examining public opinion.

The government says the initiative, the first of its kind, doesn’t necessarily guarantee the banning of dog meat. The seemingly vague stance drew quick protests from both dog farmers and animal rights activists. Lee Won Bok, head of the Korea Association for Animal Protection, called the government’s announcement “very disappointing” because it didn’t include any concrete plans on how to ban dog meat consumption.

Ju said the farmers, mostly poor, elderly people, want the government to temporarily legalize dog meat consumption for about 20 years, with the expectation that demand will gradually taper off. Lee said animal rights organizations want a quicker end of the business.

We need to start by ending in Yulin festival in China.

Lol… Regular 404 in my country 🇳🇬🤩😉😉😉

As far as they do not mistreat the animals, there’s no moral difference, just culture. Growing any animals in captivity for food is a pretty twisted idea, hunting would be more fair ( I eat meat, but I see the dilemma).

It is Animal Cruelty, Disgusting and Nasty to eat dogs! They are pets!!!

I love our canine friends. But the notion that it's all right to eat cows, pigs, and chickens but not dogs is a rather ethnocentric assumption. To say it's all right to eat the ones we don't keep as pets is pretty flimsy morality. It's probably time to switch to lab-grown meat.

Just Disgusting. Shouldn’t even have to think about it

Makes you wonder, how many times we may have had Fidoe stir fry, here.😜

Dog Meat! Eww! No Thanks!

They actually eat dogs? I thought that was a myth. I’m from Iowa, we’ll send them some of our millions of hogs. I don’t understand how anyone could raise a dog and eat it.
