South Asian SEVENTEEN Fans Deserve to Be Heard

on his official Instagram account stating that “Norazo has no intentions of committing racism or religious mockery at all” and admitting the duo’s wrongdoing ten years ago. This response made it clear that the voices of fans were loud enough to be noticed. Still, SEVENTEEN and its parent company Pledis have not addressed the incident, edited the video, or apologized. Instead, Pledis released the second part of the variety show episode on July 20.

It’s hard, as a SEVENTEEN fan and as a South Asian person, to take on the burden of this issue. No fan should have to defend their culture to the artists they love. Simultaneously, we as fans need to continue to speak up and make sure that K-pop idols and their companies are held accountable for their actions and the ever-growing power of their massive platforms. When artists let uncomfortable situations pass by unchecked, it’s a missed opportunity for growth for the artist and education for fans of all cultures. More destructively, it perpetuates and legitimizes racism in the eyes of the public.

Ultimately, fans want to be heard, and apologizing is a good way to start. But acknowledgement is only the beginning of taking fans and general audiences seriously — we want to see artists admit fault when they’ve made a mistake, and then actively listen and learn going forward. It will make fandom that much more enjoyable for everyone.
