As the NFL grapples with a dearth of minority coaches, the group assembled by new Texans boss Lovie Smith is representative of how a modern staff should look.Growing up in the 1970s, I was often compared to Michael Evans, the fictional younger son of James and Florida Evans on the TV sitcom “Good Times.”

In one episode of “Good Times,” Michael challenged his sister Thelma’s new fiancé Keith, a college football star who was about to join the NFL.Keith joked that the reason was Black players couldn’t afford to take the pay cut. He then added that there would be Black head coaches real soon.My dislike of Keith was strong — after all, he was engaged to my future wife — so of course I thought his answer was ridiculous.for why there were no black managers in Major League Baseball.
