Dr. Renée Richards reaches for a backhanded return during a match with Australia's Lesley Hunt in the $100,000 Women's Professional Tennis Tournament at Walter Brown Arena.Renée Richards was set to play in the 1976 U.S. Open until officials learned she was assigned male at birth and attempted to ban her from competing.
