New incentives that Salt Lake City leaders hope will encourage construction of more affordable housing took an extended thrashing Wednesday from low-income advocates and scores of residents who say the moves threaten their neighborhoods.

“I don’t feel this benefits anybody,” one resident complains, “except for real estate developers” as city strives to lower barriers to building more apartments, town homes, cottages and row houses.

But a two-hour public hearing late Wednesday before the planning commission on the ideas drew torrents of criticism, from several perspectives — though all seemed to agree the envisioned rents of $1,400 a month under the plans were not really affordable to most residents., commission member and a University of Utah professor of finance and real estate.

Utah law restricts how city officials can use those websites and other tools to monitor short-term rentals, forcing them to rely on resident complaints. The zoning incentives also drew heavy pushback from homeowners on the east bench as well as the west side, with dozens testifying against the proposals compared to a handful in support. While many praised efforts to bring more affordable homes, they repeatedly voiced opposition to most of the plan’s main elements.

Well it is a free market and you can always pitch a tent along the freeway. Seems to be common in OR.

That could be picture of my in-laws area. Probably is. Wait till ‘you have no choice-MOVE!’ starts. Maybe they’ll rethink their choices. Too late but they’re old anyways. 🤔that doesn’t sound right somehow.

Supply & demand meet cognitive dissonance.

I can understand both sides of this. Utah doesn’t have a housing crisis, we have an AFFORDABLE housing crisis. We need rent control, not re-zoning.

And these are the same people that complain about the homeless

This is what you get when your legis is made up largely of property owners and developers.

Result of increasing developing opportunities for the few is just more unaffordable housing for the many.

Yep 🙄

Darin Mano: Salt Lake City is prepared to make significant investments in Ballpark area'Ballpark, we can do better. Rather than focusing on problems, let’s work together to find solutions. Let’s make sure everyone knows how great the Ballpark neighborhood really is,' writes Salt Lake City Council member Darin Mano. Yes, work on doing that, because at the moment everyone knows that’s not true. 👍 Ballpark residents probably have the lowest firearm ownership rate in the state. Maybe The Avenues has a lower rate.

Leaders praise growth of downtown Salt Lake CitySALT LAKE CITY GROWTH - Utah is one of the fastest growing states in the country. The annual State of Downtown event was held Thursday morning, touting the growth that has been seen in Salt Lake City. The surge in the downtown area isn't hard to see. And few of their voices will ever be heard because of the gerrymandering BS that SpencerJCox and the rest of Utah's GQP have done. 'Leaders praise' — the North Korea vibes are strong. I guess we’re all going to drink beer when the water runs out. 👍
