Sir'Jabari Rice copied former Houston Fort Bend Marshall teammate John Walker III’s deceptive shot fake and has since made the move his own. It’s become a lethal part of the shooting guard’s arsenal.AUSTIN — As a wiry shooting guard who topped out at 6-foot-4, Sir’Jabari Rice often has to get by with guile and subterfuge.
“I started developing it my sophomore year,” Rice said. “One of my teammates I played with, he used to do it very well. So I thought I’d add it to my game. And John just created a habit of doing it after I’ve seen him do it.”He unleashed it on unwitting defenders throughout his time at New Mexico State, pump-faking his way to three All-WAC selections, over 1,000 career points, three conference championships and an upset over UConn in last season’s NCAA tournament.
Jacob Groves was the second sucker. He lunged toward Rice on a step-back corner 3 attempt, but the Longhorn pulled it back down, absorbed the collision and drew the three-shot foul. Rice has mastered the art of knowing when to let it rip and when to deploy the fake. He knows that signature move shows up in all the scouting reports these days, so rather than overusing it he maintains a diverse move set and goes “off feel.”His body coils, knees bending, ball rising overhead, everything to indicate a shot is coming.
The Longhorns are 5-0 since head coach Chris Beard was indefinitely suspended Dec. 12 after he was arrested and charged with felony family violence. Associate head coach Rodney Terry has served as the team’s acting head coach while the University decides whether to retain Beard or fire him for cause.
