Simu Liu's viral Shang-Chi tweet asking Marvel to talk about bringing the character to life is now on a Hollywood billboard for a social campaign. After starting his career as an extra and stuntman, Liu began gaining prominence on screen in 2015 with series regular roles in the Canadian crime drama Blood and Water and the acclaimed sitcom Kim's Convenience. The 32-year-old star would later land his breakout role as the titular hero in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe outing explored the origin stories of Shang-Chi as he is the descendant of Wenwu, the leader of the Ten Rings criminal organization and better known as the Mandarin around the world. Desperate to live a normal life, Shang-Chi abandons a mission his father sent him on and instead goes into hiding in San Francisco, though finds himself drawn back into his past when the Ten Rings emerge and come looking for him and his estranged sister.
Liu's viral Shang-Chi tweet became the talk of the town in the years that followed its posting as not only were there calls for Marvel Studios to explore its diverse roster of heroes but later for the star's actual casting in the role.
With the first Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings proving to be a major hit for the studio, Marvel is already forging on ahead with future plans for the character. Co-writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton is returning to write and direct the sequel, which Liu has teased he has begun pitching story ideas and larger MCU connections in comparison to its predecessor. In the meantime, audiences can catch up with or revisit Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on Disney+ now. .
