CHATSWORTH — Sierra Canyon’s defensive line is confident, raised by the competition within its group and sharpened by the high-speed reps it takes in practice. Opposing quarterbacks are usually feeling the opposite.
“And a lot of that is not from blitzing,” defensive coordinator Chris Rizzo said. “This year we’ve got great cover guys. So I think that helps with the D-line getting the pressure on the quarterback and taking away their first reads.”Sierra Canyon’s defense relies on athleticism and speed rather than size and depth. Players rotate through a 3-tech spot as well, giving the Trailblazers a powerful advantage.
Now that the season is underway, Rizzo and his staff are still switching up the defense on a weekly basis. Sierra Canyon has been preparing this week for Friday’s game against Orange Lutheran , a Trinity League team that’s ranked No. 7 in the latest CalPreps rankings. The Trailblazers are No. 4 in those rankings.
“If we shut him down, it’s gonna be a long night for them,” Ferguson said. “And with the D-line we have right now, he’s gonna feel us. He ain’t played against a D-line like we have now. So we’re gonna see how he reacts.” “They even told me like, we don’t care,” Wesley said, “you still have to earn your spot. And so I really took that and it helped me push throughout the whole summer as soon as eighth grade ended.”
“I say it’s a bad game if I don’t reach that goal,” Wesley said. “My pops told me, even if you don’t like get a sack as you expected, to keep pushing. Keep pushing to aim for that goal.”
