in the country and the main public transit between the Bay Area cities of San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and the surrounding suburbs. We wanted to work outside the traditional structure of police response to reimagine safety, shepherding significant changes that increase the security of all BART riders, but especially of girls like us. Tangible changes include improvements like atraining video and the ability to report incidents of sexual harassment.
Acknowledging that a paradigm shift in policies does not necessarily reflect a shift in culture, participants worked with Nisha Sethi, an artist at Betti Ono, to develop poster designs. Three hundred of them were printed for display inside train cars. These posters, alongside 50 large signs that will be displayed outside of BART stations , firmly state that sexual harassment will not be tolerated.
But we didn’t stop there. We mobilized an intergenerational group of leaders to approach BART officials with our findings. The BART executives present followed with action, approving to support a youth-led partnership and working group to advance a gender-equity safety action plan for transit spaces. By listening to us, BART became a leader in centering youth in addressing gender-based violence and reimagining safety.Girls made key decisions to drive this initiative and held 100 paid roles, including social media strategy, public speaking, art and campaign design, and focus groups.
At our April 2021 launch, we were overwhelmed with pride for what we had accomplished. We expanded reporting channels for sexual harassment and are giving survivors the right to determine what avenue of help is best for them — which includes saying no to police intervention.
