Photo: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY SportsIn 2020, the Cleveland Browns enjoyed a resurgence, going 11-5 in the regular season. The Browns played well enough to end their franchise-record and league-high 18-year playoff drought. They even won the wild-card round matchup against division rival Pittsburgh Steelers for their first playoff victory in 27 years. However, they weren't satisfied with just getting to the playoffs.

After the offseason that followed, some NFL analysts suggested Cleveland could be a dark-horse Super Bowl team in 2021. However, it's probably fair to say that the 2021 season hasn't gone as anyone expected. Like most NFL franchises, the team typically goes as far as their quarterback takes them, so it’s no surprise that Cleveland's inconsistency in a disappointing season also mirrored the inconsistency of their quarterback Baker Mayfield. There were several analysts who pegged Mayfield as Cleveland's long-term option at quarterback. However, there are genuine reservations about whether the Browns should pay him a lucrative contract. Mayfield was hampered all year by a torn labrum, shoulder fracture, and injuries to his ribs and legs. Surely these factors played a role in his wildly inconsistent and turnover-prone play in 2021. However, the torn labrum is in his non-throwing shoulder and Mayfield has clearly looked unsure of himself in the pocket.

'I love it here': Browns TE David Njoku hopeful to remain in Cleveland in 2022As the Cleveland Browns head into the offseason, wrapping up their season with a win over the Bengals Sunday but missing the playoffs in a disappointing season, the team now looks ahead to the 2022 season—and one player in particular hopes that he can be a part of it.

Cavaliers have big fan in Browns’ Greg Newsome II“I‘m at every single game,” Newsome said. “Every home game I will be at, obviously if we don’t play or I don’t have to go to the hotel. I’ll be out there every single game that I can get to.”

Jadeveon Clowney makes most of Browns’ season finale against BengalsIn the 21-16 Cleveland win, Clowney sacked Bengals quarterback Brandon Allen twice. The hits brought Clowney’s total to nine sacks this season and gives him an extra $750,000 in sack incentives.

Who the Browns will play in 2022As the old saying goes in Cleveland, there's always next year, and with the sights now set on the 2022 season, the team can already start some planning when it comes to what teams they'll be playing.

The Browns played well enough to end their franchise-record and league-high 18-year playoff drought. They even won the wild-card round matchup against division rival Pittsburgh Steelers for their first playoff victory in 27 years. "I love it here. However, they weren't satisfied with just getting to the playoffs. I’ll be out there every single game that I can get to. After the offseason that followed, some NFL analysts suggested Cleveland could be a dark-horse Super Bowl team in 2021. I honestly want to be here for the rest of my career," Njoku said Monday. However, it's probably fair to say that the 2021 season hasn't gone as anyone expected. On the first play of the second quarter, Clowney had maybe the easiest sack of his career as Allen, filling in for Bengals starter Joe Burrow who is resting before the playoffs, seemingly tripped over his own feet.

Like most NFL franchises, the team typically goes as far as their quarterback takes them, so it’s no surprise that Cleveland's inconsistency in a disappointing season also mirrored the inconsistency of their quarterback Baker Mayfield. He had 36 receptions for 475 yards and four touchdowns, leading the team in receiving touchdowns. Among all rookie cornerbacks in the league, Newsome has the second-best coverage grade in the league from Pro Football Focus (70. There were several analysts who pegged Mayfield as Cleveland's long-term option at quarterback. However, there are genuine reservations about whether the Browns should pay him a lucrative contract. Njoku said that his agents are in discussions with the Browns about what an extension might look like for him to see if they can get a deal done. Mayfield was hampered all year by a torn labrum, shoulder fracture, and injuries to his ribs and legs. Cleveland currently holds a 22-18 record, and has gotten a strong blend of production from veterans and young players, defying outside expectations in the process. Surely these factors played a role in his wildly inconsistent and turnover-prone play in 2021. "They're excited and hopeful that we do come to an agreement and I end up staying here," Njoku said. Seven, which he hit last week against the Steelers, would have been good for $500,000.

However, the torn labrum is in his non-throwing shoulder and Mayfield has clearly looked unsure of himself in the pocket.  Injuries up front also contributed to the inconsistencies on offense. These are exciting times, a lot of blood, sweat and tears that was put into these last few years, and I owe it all to God and we've got to keep working. Another Cleveland rookie has been a bright spot in the turnaround: Evan Mobley, who was drafted third overall by the Cavs this summer and is in the running for the NBA Rookie of the Year award. The offensive line that established itself as one of the NFL’s best units in 2020 was scrambling to get backups up to speed for long enough to remain in playoff contention. However, the most prolific offenses in the NFL are still quarterback-driven. Earlier in the season, Njoku expressed a desire to focus on his blocking abilities this season—an area that all of the tight ends were heavy on in practice and training throughout the year. So given the season Mayfield is coming off of, should the Browns draft a quarterback in 2022? My answer is a resounding yes.1 rebounds and 2. The $500,000 in bonus money will help make up for the extra $500,000 he would have netted had the Browns made the playoffs.

Cleveland's roster is one of the best in the NFL from top to bottom. "Consistent work. As a result, you'll never know when you'll be picking this high in another draft. Cleveland is currently slated to have a top-15 pick and have eight selections in the 2022 NFL Draft. So, with the right mentality and all the work you put in, you have to be successful.6 points and 7. They already decided to pick up Mayfield’s fifth-year option at $19 million, so they have likely bought themselves a year to develop a young quarterback. The Browns are in a position to draft a top-three quarterback in the class, and taking a young quarterback gives this talented roster the ability to continue to build this team long term without having to pay a quarterback market value for a starting-caliber quarterback."It's just is back to work for us. “I’m just really happy to be back out there and still be out there this late in the season and healthy, so just trying to finish up strong here and leave it out on the field,” Clowney said after the Steelers game.

Keeping the core of this team intact is essential to their success. NBA All-Star voting is open until midnight EDT on Jan.  In my latest mock draft , the Browns selected quarterback Desmond Ridder. So we've been doing this for a very long time and we're just going to keep following what we do and this work, and good things will happen. Ridder enjoyed a stellar year leading Cincinnati to an undefeated season and the College Football Playoff before losing in the semi-final to Alabama. He threw for 3,334 yards, 30 touchdowns, and eight interceptions." And while he waits to see what the future holds for him in Cleveland, Njoku said there's one thing the team is focused on. - Get the latest Browns merchandise: Here’s where you can order. In their only loss of the season to Alabama, Ridder faced competition against a team that's as close to an NFL roster as any in college football. Defensive coordinator Joe Woods said on Thursday that he and Clowney hadn’t yet talked about Clowney’s future in Cleveland either.

While he didn't play great, he certainly didn't play poorly—most importantly, he wasn't the reason they lost the game."It's a tough pill to swallow right now because we know how good we were on the roster, we knew the talent that we had, but we just couldn't put it all together for whatever reason. Ridder is a quarterback with better size and more escapability than Mayfield with as strong of an arm. Ridder hasn't been the most accurate quarterback in his career, but neither was Mayfield in 2021." Many believe accuracy can be improved and analysts typically point to Josh Allen as an example of this. With this roster being as talented as it is, it puts the Browns in the enviable position of drafting a young quarterback without putting the pressure on him to be the reason they win football games right away. Going into next season, there’s a possibility Clowney could ask for more money or a longer contract than the Browns are willing or able to dish out.

Browns fans, if your team comes away with any of the top young quarterbacks in this year’s draft, they could be poised to turn the corner and return to their 2020 form long-term.
