Retailers say theft is rising as more people shop in stores, cutting into profits that were already under pressure

“Theft is growing at a faster rate than sales,” said Dean Rosenblum, a senior U.S. retail analyst at Bernstein Research. Mr. Rosenblum said theft is becoming a big enough problem that it’s starting to affect margins, which is why retailers are talking about it more frequently.

He added that a jump in organized retail crime in certain areas of the country is also a factor. “These are crime levels we haven’t seen before,” Mr. Gennette said. Retailers calculate shrink differently and many don’t report thefts to the police, leading to imprecise measurements, said Cory Lowe, a senior research scientist with the Loss Prevention Research Council.

“Seven years ago, internal theft was the largest category of loss by retailers,” said David Johnston, the NRF’s vice president of asset protection and retail operations, referring to theft by employees. “Now, it’s external theft.”and making use of facial recognition software to help identify repeat offenders.Photo:Mr.

If anyone is thinking of stealing food from target, next time take more than you need.

After record profits in the past couple years

Stores that have jacked up prices under cover of “inflation” is concerned that people are stealing back some of the money they stole to begin with.

It’s because they insulted consumers by introducing self-checkout You want me to do a cashiers job for free? I’ll take a little off the top

Because of inflation and jobless Give an idea that can reduce social evils.... Best ideas achieved through charity, Sadaqa, human kind, and sympathy. While we are attracting humans through the latest advertisements and non natural behaviors, productions.

But people say retailers have insurance.

Mostly in places that don’t enforce laws.

Good.

Maybe if we enforce the law instead of just watch the people take all the shit and walk out the doors with no consequences, it might change things, and then start putting them away for maximum sentences for the crime and watch how fast it stops!

Hey, maybe self-checkouts was a bad idea 🤷‍♂️ among other things driving shoplifting. It’s not theft. Don’t call it theft.

Gee, nobody can even afford to survive and rent goes up every year and they wonder why kids are stealing handbags. Prosecute the real criminals, the property management companies

이곳 사무실에서는 국정원놈들이 여전히 저항하고 있다. 마치 나를 다룰 수 있다는 듯이

Close the stores

Theft has been made LEGAL in several Democrat run cities. The problem is with government, not the stores or even the shoplifters. Democrats DESTROY!

That doesn't make sense. Target for example had profits of over 100 Billion dollars last year. Where is the pressure exactly?

Good, steal more

Stores have been open awhile… Gee WSJ what has been rising?Hint not ppls savings but credit card debt(even more w/looming Food Stamp hunger) but prices r constantly rising becuz of INFLATION Oh & some price gouging too!

Close the stores in those communities. They’re all run by progressive Democrats who are soft on crime. Maybe the people will wake up and demand change. If not, then Tough Shit!!

there’s no accountability for retail theft

So many retailers have decided to look the other way, not prosecute, not invest in security, so they are reaping what they sow.

You can thank Democrat policies for this surge in shoplifting.

don't you understand? It will stop as soon as you give black people reparations.

Or maybe it the recent trend of not prosecuting or even attempting to deter retail theft in the name of social justice

The question is always right there. Why are so many people need to be thieves? If they can live well, there will be surely no thieves or the numbers gonna probably turn down, or we then will not put so many efforts on tackling with this problem.

When they have their Quarterly call to investors (even if you own 1 share, you have access to this info), the CEO’s and leadership team say the opposite. Ex: Walgreens $WBA 2 months ago.

…stealing isn’t shopping…where are most of the thefts occurring?…perhaps close high theft stores (seems likely it is centered on urban locations) and focus on communities that value retail…

Maybe retailers need to pay people more and have more staff to deter theft.

Are we surprised

Every retailer boarded in the defund the police story. So, fuck it.

When there is no accountability for thieves, they will eventually kill the places they steal from. Soon the poor will have nowhere to shop. Honesty uses to be a hallmark here in the U.S. Now, the Soros D.A.'s have just created another subsidy program for them.

Learned from their government no face no case

Ban masks.

I say this as a student who gets the maximum Pell Grant each year… you must be extra strict with people who are marginalized, you must have extraordinary norms and policies in place to discourage Vice, not out of hatred towards the disenfranchised, but a genuine love

As the adage goes...go woke go broke. People are tired of being put in a box and their spending habits reflect this ire at being persecuted

It’s why I vote democrat!

Democrats have made it very clear stealing is OK.

Pass a Good Samaritan like law for store owners, employees, security officers, law enforcement and law abiding CCW carrying citizens to shoot shoplifters and see the problem go away fast.

Profits under pressure from price gouging.

Is this due to soft on crime policies?

Thank you so very much people
