2021 is already more than halfway over, and while that may be difficult to believe, that doesn't mean it’s not true! Now that July has arrived, Gaon, a company tasked with organizing the weekly charts in South Korea, has revealed which songs and albums have performed best throughout the first six months of the year, and these rankings are populated entirely by the biggest names in the K-pop field.
This year’s bestselling song in South Korea comes from an unlikely musician, as trot singer and YouTuber Lim Young-woong beats many industry favorites in the nation with his unlikely smash “My Love like Starlight.” The tune became his first leader on the Gaon Digital chart, and throughout the first six months of 2021 it has apparently sold more copies than any other release.
Former Wanna One singer and solo superstar Kang Daniel fills the next two spots, as his smashes “Antidote” and “Paranoia” settle at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Both tunes are featured on his latest EP, which itself became a bestseller when it was released in mid-April. Kang is one of just two acts that manage to place more than a single tune inside the top 10 on the competitive sales list.
IU, the second act to claim more than one space inside the top 10 on this midyear ranking of the bestselling songs in South Korea, appears next. Her single “Celebrity” lands at No. 4, while her other chart win “Lilac” appears at No. 9.
