What it takes to climb Kilimanjaro: stamina, warm boots, a phone charger

MOUNT KILIMANJARO—At 13,800 feet on Africa’s highest mountain, as the nighttime temperature dipped and I drew my hot-water bottle closer, the following thoughts occurred in quick succession:

I was toasty in my sleeping bag. My iPhone, sitting on the tent floor, was not. How would I survive if my phone died on the mountain?

maggieNYT am i the only person thinking, i want to vomit reading about these over priviliedged white people ?

maggieNYT Well way to totally miss the point, but try again tomorrow

This is really sad. You are so incredibly lucky to have had this experience but all you could concerned yourself with was the state of your phone. Such a shame.

maggieNYT

maggieNYT One of the saddest articles I have ever read.I climbed Kili about 6 years ago. Took only one phone.Kept it on airplane mode almost the whole time except a few quick texts to let the family know I was ok.Exploring the beauty of this earth & nature is what brought me to the Mt.

Ok that is lame

And beer.

maggieNYT I’ve read Kilimanjaro can be climbed to the top with NO special climbing gear. All on trails but need lots of stamina and need to camp out long enough at higher altitude to become accustomed to less oxygen.

maggieNYT At the base, I bought a disposable camera in case my digital one died. Best twenty bucks I ever spent.

Money and stupidity being the main reason

Another installment of: Assholes keeping their phone charged to wreck the mystique of the outdoors.

No.

Oh and money.

Couldn’t find anything newsworthy to write about

No thanks.

Great article that had me relive every moment from my journey to the summit on Aug 26, 2019

I summited without a Phone

Haha sounds almost identical to my journey to the top. Hilarious and oh so true
