Since launching his eponymous foundation to support underserved youth in 2019, O'Neal, who played for six teams during his 19-year career in the NBA, has sought to recruit an all-star roster.
Just this month, he welcomed business leaders including Jamie Siminoff, founder and CEO of Ring, Jeanie Buss, owner and president of the LA Lakers, and Elicia Azali, chief revenue officer of The General to the Shaquille O’Neal Foundation’s board of directors. O’Neal will also continue to partner with local organizations including Boys & Girls Clubs and Communities in Schools. With the latter, it teamed up on Shaq-To-School, an initiative that has donated $10 million worth of school supplies across the country.
Many of O'Neal’s efforts have been unplanned, not to mention out of his own pocket. Earlier this month, he paid for an Atlanta resident’s engagement ring at a local Zales. “I'm doing this because this is what I was taught to do by Dr. Lucille Amir, who happens to be my mother,” says O’Neal.spoke to O’Neal about how he’s personalizing his philanthropic efforts, the importance of maintaining a strong team and his goal for the Shaquille O'Neal Foundation as it continues to evolve.
He does this because of his free throw form.
