Dennis Glenn stands near a mural of George Floyd at Yates High School as they learn the guilty verdict on all counts in the murder trial of former Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, in Houston.Months before George Floyd’s murder — before he cried for his mother while taking his last breath — a feeling of mediocrity had settled into my gut, an ache that spread throughout my body.

Then came George Floyd and his unthinkable murder at the hands of a policeman. He is the reason I became a columnist covering culture and race. My voice — as a journalist, a mother and a Black woman — was born, or maybe reborn in many ways, out of his death. “We all know people who have lived long enough to know that this country loses its appetite for discussions about race and racial discrimination at some point,” Price said. “And so what is encouraging about this moment is that some of the steps that are being taken seem like they will be institutionalized, that they might last for a good little while.”

I wish I had joined that peaceful protest of nearly 60,000 in solidarity. A team of Chronicle reporters and photographers — none of whom were Black — was dispatched to cover history unfolding. Not that being Black is a requirement for covering a Black Lives Matter rally, but in this case, for me it was personal.

“George Floyd is a son of the city,” Price said. “There was something about him that everybody from Houston could identify with, particularly if you’re from the old Black neighborhoods, Third Ward, Fifth Ward, Sunnyside. You know the community he grew up in and you know what it takes for a person like that to try to change their life around, to move somewhere like Minnesota. There’s so much about this story that resonated with Houstonians. And keep in mind, at the same time, we were home.

What a legacy-put on a pedestal for being a career criminal. Yes he should not have died the way did but people forget his life as a career criminal. My opinion only.

A despicable human being has angel wings Cop totally mishandled that, although that practice was not uncommon at all, it this had NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE!!!!!!!
