SEATTLE — The Seattle City Council approved proposals Monday that would reduce the police department by as many as 100 officers through layoffs and attrition — an action supported by demonstrators who have marched in the city following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis but strongly opposed by the mayor and police chief.
The City Council also cut Police Chief Carmen Best’s roughly $285,000 annual salary and the pay of other top police leaders, although the final cuts to Best’s salary were significantly more modest than those approved last week. The council plan also takes officers off a team that removes homeless camps.
Mayor Jenny Durkan and Best had urged the council to slow down its discussions about police budgets, saying the issue could be taken up in earnest when the 2021 city budget is considered. They also said any layoffs would disproportionately target newer officers, often hired from Black and brown communities, and would inevitably lead to lawsuits.

Eliminating police may be supported by many imported (and paid?) demonstrators, but the black and white residents of Seattle that I know universally oppose cutting police. Several of my friends have lost businesses to the widespread crime that city leaders tolerate (encourage?).
Because less police officers means a safer city? Seattle has one of the highest property crimes, half are vehicles, among major cities in America. Certainly be a little easier to steal those cars.
We have police so that citizens don’t have to take up arms and defend themselves. Criminal elements won’t simply disappear, and law abiding citizens have the right to be defended.

Seattle should raise the standards and qualifications for hiring police officers. This will result in less candidates hired (giving the community the reduced police force they want), but those who are hired will be part of a better behaved police force (good for the city).
Take the funds for those 100 officers & redirect them to social services for tasks/areas that the P.D. has no training or cause to be involved in. That takes the pressure off of the P.D., the judicial system AND the jail system.
And all the big tech companies that came here are going to leave. Along with Amazon. Crazy to see how a small group of morons can single handily ruin a once Amazing city. I hope every business closes its doors. Then all the homeless people won’t have anywhere to steal from.
