Scotland said on Jan. 17 it had raised 700 million pounds in leases for 7,000 square kilometres of seabed earmarked for the development of nearly 25 gigawatts of offshore wind power.
Winning bidders for the 17 ScotWind projects included UK-listed oil majors BP and Royal Dutch Shell, as well as renewable energy specialists like Iberdrola-owned ScottishPower and regional utility SSE. Crown Estate Scotland, which ran the lease auction, said the projects should result in billions of pounds of investment in the Scottish economy.
