Schools struggle to stay open as quarantines sideline staff

Scores of employees are quarantined because of known or potential exposure. The effects of school staffing struggles have prompted some officials to suggest relaxing quarantine rules. In Missouri, Republican Gov. Mike Parson took a different approach to trying to keep schools open. He announced new guidance this month that teachers and students exposed to an infected person no longer have to quarantine for two weeks as long as both people were wearing masks. He said quarantines had interrupted learning and created staff shortages.

My kid's school just has no class when a teacher is out. Four days with no Algebra 2 when the teacher had to isolate waiting out a COVID test. Ludicrous.

There was a huge teacher shortage before the pandemic. Years of blaming teachers for poor performing schools.

Pay rates for subs are often too low, especially considering that subbing lower levels does not yield more $. Pay should be increased at the elementary level- it’s simply much harder work! Combine this with Covid and...yeah I get why no one wants to sub during these times esp K-5

A shortage of substitute teachers means that all the full-time teachers aren't even going to work but still they're collect a big fat paycheck in their big fat pension plans and their big fat Healthcare they think they need to satisfy their big fat egos

Sub shortages are not new. The problem now is that no longer can they split classes and place students in other classes because of overcrowding. Compensation is the real reason. Teachers are underpaid, so you can imagine how little subs are offered.

I feel like public education is becoming antiquated. We live in the age of information, automation, and communication. There are simple solutions coming for these problems. Like Temi here, we can educate students around the globe without staffing teachers. Less money overall.

This will forever be the life that we created. Quarantining healthy people without symptoms with negative test results. If 100% eradication is the benchmark, nothing will ever function normally. Massive job loss/suicides/depression is ramping up because of shutdowns.

I live in NV. They have a huge shortage...I am getting my teaching cert and planned to sub, but it costs $180 to apply, $56 to get finger-printed and you only make $90 a day. That is incredibly not worth the COVID risk.

They dont get paid enough. Tax wall street more than 21% on cap gains and I am sure there will be no shortage as long as tax progressively.
