A New York high school teacher is under fire after giving students an assignment saying George Floyd died as a result of a heart attack and drug overdose rather than because a police officer knelt on his neck for nine and a half minutes.

The assignment given Friday asked Saugerties High School students to write a paragraph with a bold “thematic” statement in the format given by the state exam using two examples. One example stated that Floyd did not die because former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin put a knee of Floyd’s neck, but rather because of a heart attack and drug overdose., as well as second-degree manslaughter last month and has since filed a motion for a new trial.

“Even if we were not talking about this case, specifically, it takes the death of a person, I'd say, from a very cold and distant point of view,” Irizarry said. “I keep coming back to empathy. It is not an empathetic point of view of a person who died, it is blaming a person who's died for their own death. That chips away at empathy.”

“A person, or people, who do harm, need to hear it," Irizarry said."Restitution can be made, commitment to change can be made.”“There are a lot of nice white people who want a certain type of progressive, open, broad, forward-thinking education for their children that are occasionally in the fight,” Irizarry said. ”They are Facebook brave ... but are pretty consistently absent unless the Black woman is out there in front fighting. And it's disappointing. And it's exhausting.

Schools should follow the COURT RULINGS.. 2nd degree MURDER

So exhausting. These folks have always existed. Do not hesitate to challenge every questionable assignment that your children receive. I’ve lost count of the times slavery and servitude were framed as “happy lifestyles, “chosen” by African “immigrants”. Shut it down immediately.

This teacher should be handcuff and placed in the same position under the same circumstances. I assure you he will crumble in 3 minutes.

9 and a half minutes to choke someone to death. Didn’t know it took that long. If so that is real dedication to cause especially with an audience distracting you.

These people!!!!!

Kick him - out lord knows what other lies he’s telling them ..

Should be FIRED...

Wouldn't a good assignment be letting the students argue what they think is the cause of his death? You know research and critical thinking?

I am from an Appalachian community where racism was very overt so no need to wonder. In a wierd way these acts of racism are good because it exposes the racist and forces the school to address their behavior. Take your hood off and show your face so I can deal with your hate.

Ruling paves way for longer sentence in George Floyd's deathA Minnesota judge has ruled that there were aggravating factors in the death of George Floyd, paving the way for the possibility of a longer sentence for Derek Chauvin, according to an order made public Wednesday. In his ruling dated Tuesday, Judge Peter Cahill found that Chauvin abused his authority as a police officer when he restrained Floyd last year and that he treated Floyd with particular cruelty. Cahill said Chauvin and two other officers held Floyd handcuffed, in a prone position on the street for an “inordinate amount of time” and that Chauvin knew the restraint was dangerous.
