An update of the preliminary police budget will be presented by the police commission on Oct. 11.

Activate your Online Access NowProposed police budgets are approved by the police commission before they go to city council’s budget process, where members of council give final approval for the amount to be transferred to the force for its operating and capital expenses, minus revenues.

Police Chief Troy Cooper said police face the same financial pressures as city council: staff compensation, and inflation driving up the cost of goods. “Our discussions now are going to be around what level of services are we going to be expected to provide and what the impacts of the budget will be once we decide that.”“Obviously this is not a year where we’re going to make great strides as far as new services provided by SPS, but we don’t want to reduce the ability of the service to respond in the face of some of the challenges that we’re seeing,” Cooper said.

This year, much discussion at police commission meetings has been about the increased number of calls for service, especially non-criminal calls such as suspicious persons. This is expected to factor into the presentation to the council committee. There was an error, please provide a valid email address. Thanks for signing up!The next issue of Afternoon Headlines will soon be in your inbox.
