El total de casos nuevos del martes fue de 908, tras el recuento del lunes de 1204, la cifra diaria más alta registrada desde el 22 de julio. El número diario de nuevos casos ha superado los 700 todos los días excepto uno en las últimas dos semanas.

El año pasado, los departamentos de salud pública obligaron a los hospitales a cancelar procedimientos médicos programados —desde prótesis de rodilla hasta operaciones de cáncer— para dejar espacio a los pacientes de COVID. Hasta ahora, no parece que eso esté ocurriendo todavía en los hospitales locales.

Y COVID-19 ya está ejerciendo una fuerte presión sobre las partes más especializadas del sistema sanitario. Yi, que coordina el programa móvil de oxigenación por membrana extracorpórea o ECMO de la UCSD, dijo que el número de solicitudes del servicio se ha disparado hasta el punto de que los programas locales se ven ahora obligados a ser más selectivos que en el pasado reciente.

En las últimas semanas, dijo el doctor Mazen Odish, neumólogo de la UCSD que trabaja con Yi, los pacientes que llegan a la unidad son mucho más jóvenes que el año pasado. De los seis pacientes con COVID-19 que están actualmente en ECMO en la UCSD, ninguno está vacunados.
