“We’ve heard all the comments on television from some of our government officials about thoughts and prayers and condolences, and on and on and on,” Popovich said. “It’s the same statements after every massacre, exactly the same, and it never changes — and more children are dead, more teachers and more civilians dead.”, oftentimes after other mass shootings in Texas or around the country.

Five of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in American history have taken place in the Lone Star State. The list includes the 2019 massacre at a Walmart in El Paso and the 2017 shooting at a Sutherland Springs church. But in the years since those tragedies, Texas’ GOP leaders have not passed any laws that would restrict access to firearms, including assault rifles — the weapon of choice in all of those shootings. And Popovich said he’s had enough.

“Nothing has changed,” he told the crowd. “Our governor, after the last massacre, made statements and promises that he would look at the gun laws, he would look at the legislation. Nothing happened.”Alongside Gov. Greg Abbott, Popovich also singled out U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, who was confronted by a British reporter in the days after the Uvalde shooting.
