Baldwin’s stunt double accidentally fired two rounds Saturday after being told that the gun was “cold” — lingo for a weapon that doesn’t have any ammunition, including blanks — two crew members who witnessed the episode told the Los Angeles Times. The tragedy occurred Thursday afternoon during filming of a gunfight that began in a church that is part of the old Western town at the ranch. Baldwin’s character was supposed to back out of the church, according to production notes obtained by The Times. It was the 12th day of a 21-day shoot.
Instead, the B-camera operator was on a dolly with a monitor, checking out the potential shots. Hutchins was also looking at the monitor from over the operator’s shoulder, as was the movie’s director, Joel Souza, who was crouching just behind her. Earlier in the day, the camera crew arrived as expected at 6:30 a.m. and began gathering their gear and personal belongings to leave, one knowledgeable crew member told The Times.Labor trouble had been brewing for days on the dusty set at the Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe.

There was a previous discharge of live rounds by Balwin's stunt double a few days earlier. He was told it was empty.
'The safety of our cast and crew is the top priority of Rust Productions and everyone associated with the company,' Rust Movie Productions said. Apparently NOT. THIS is exactly why UNION'S matter! Union's ensure safety precautions are met - regardless of management's wishes.

rush rush rush is all we ever did in Emergency & Icu. a person HAS to follow the guidelines and checks or people die. Looks like the lack of strong safety guidelines lead to this death OR a purposeful choice to Ignore guidelines. Either way, someone 2 go to jail. Negligence!
What the fuck! Someone needs to go to jail, for real. Who loaded the gun with live ammunition and then handed it to Baldwin. Wow who’s running the show there. Someone needs to pay for that mistake.
BTW, a Colt single action weighs over 1/2 lb more when loaded w/ live rounds + handles differently. It would take him 3 seconds to see if ANY rounds were in the chambers and a couple seconds more to see if they were blanks. Nobody is so rushed they can’t spare 5 seconds.
I accidentally fired a rifle once! I knew it was loaded. I'd never handled it before. All I did was put my finger on the trigger lightly and it fired! It had a 'hair trigger' and the owner failed to tell me that! The bullet missed a person by inches! I wonder if Alec was set up?
Everyone who handled the guns are responsible for her death. Whoever loaded it w/ live rounds + left it unattended, the A.D. who grabbed it + ASSUMED it was “cold” and mostly is Baldwin himself! He aimed & fired a gun w/out verifying it was safe! Terrible thing to live with.

I see that there are other employers besides that of Walmart who prioritizes speed over safety. It’s time we got a law passed to require safety above all other things in the workplace. No matter what your job is.

I had better gun safety training when I was 7. There needs to be some regulations in place. I have an RTX3090 on my desk that can render CGI gunfire. It's cheaper than the cost of a human life

Why is the LA times using this suspiciously passive language? 'Baldwin removed the gun from its holster once without incident, but the second time he did so, ammunition flew toward the trio around the monitor.' Ammunition just flew by itself?
What a mess. Reading this, it seems this was the preventable outcome of a nickel and dime operation. Such an amateurish production company. Here in Ontario, the safety of cast and crew is taken very seriously. Shooting would've been shut down as soon as there was any concern.

What gets me is that they kept saying 'accidental discharge'. How the fuck do you accidentally discharge a revolver without pulling the trigger? Answer. It can't.

Union crew were packing up to leave the set in protest of slapdash working conditions and were threatened with arrest if they didn't get out quicker once their non-union replacements showed up. Six hours later, the cinematographer was dead. Union means safer working conditions.
