Safety protocols standard in the industry, including gun inspections, were not strictly followed on the “Rust” set near Santa Fe, the sources said. They said at least one of the camera operators complained last weekend to a production manager about gun safety on the set.

Baldwin’s stunt double accidentally fired two rounds Saturday after being told that the gun was “cold” — lingo for a weapon that doesn’t have any ammunition, including blanks — two crew members who witnessed the episode told the Los Angeles Times.“There should have been an investigation into what happened,” the crew member said. “There were no safety meetings. There was no assurance that it wouldn’t happen again. All they wanted to do was rush, rush, rush.”

A colleague was so alarmed by the prop gun misfires that he sent a text message to the unit production manager. “We’ve now had 3 accidental discharges. This is super unsafe,” according to a copy of the message reviewed by The Times.“The safety of our cast and crew is the top priority of Rust Productions and everyone associated with the company,"Rust Movie Productions said in a statement. “Though we were not made aware of any official complaints concerning weapon or prop safety on set, we will be conducting an internal review of our procedures while production is shut down. We will continue to cooperate with the Santa Fe authorities in their investigation and offer mental health services to the cast and crew during this tragic time.”

The tragedy occurred Thursday afternoon during filming of a gunfight that began in a church that is part of the old Western town at the ranch. Baldwin’s character was supposed to back out of the church, according to production notes obtained by The Times. It was the 12th day of a 21-day shoot.

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was huddled around a monitor lining up her next camera shot when she was accidentally killed by the prop gun fired by Baldwin. The actor was preparing to film a scene in which he pulls a gun out of a holster, according to a source close to the production. Crew members had already shouted “cold gun” on the set. The filmmaking team was lining up its camera angles and had yet to retreat to the video village, an on-set area where the crew gathers to watch filming from a distance via a monitor.

Instead, the B-camera operator was on a dolly with a monitor, checking out the potential shots. Hutchins was also looking at the monitor from over the operator’s shoulder, as was the movie’s director, Joel Souza, who was crouching just behind her.Baldwin removed the gun from its holster once without incident, but the second time he repeated the action, ammunition flew toward the trio around the monitor. The projectile whizzed by the camera operator but penetrated Hutchins near her shoulder, then continued through to Souza. Hutchins immediately fell to the ground as crew members applied pressure to her wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding.

Late Friday, the Associated Press reported that Baldwin was handed a loaded weapon by an assistant director who indicated it was safe to use in the moments before the actor fired it, according to court records. The assistant director did not know the prop gun was loaded with live rounds, according to a search warrant filed in a Santa Fe County court.

The person in charge of overseeing the gun props, known as the armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, could not be reached for comment. The 24-year-old is the daughter of veteran armorer Thell Reed and had recently completed her first film as the head armorer for the movie “The Old Way,” with Clint Howard and Nicolas Cage. headtopics.com

Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer killed on set of an Alec Baldwin movie, was going to be ‘very famous,’ a director who worked with her said. But after filming began, the crews were told they instead would be required to make the 50-mile drive from Albuquerque each day, rather than stay overnight in nearby Santa Fe. That rankled crew members who worried that they might have an accident after spending 12 to 13 hours on the set.

Hutchins had been advocating for safer conditions for her team and was tearful when the camera crew left, said one crew member who was on the set.“She said, ‘I feel like I’m losing my best friends,’” recalled one of the workers. As the camera crew — members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees — spent about an hour assembling their gear at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, several nonunion crew members showed up to replace them, two of the knowledgeable people said.

One of the producers ordered the union members to leave the set and threatened to call security to remove them if they didn’t leave voluntarily.“Corners were being cut — and they brought in nonunion people so they could continue shooting,” the knowledgeable person said.

Every gun nut rn is complaining like 'you should've checked' blah blah like they know what's happening on a set. Smh There was a previous discharge of live rounds by Balwin's stunt double a few days earlier. He was told it was empty. 'The safety of our cast and crew is the top priority of Rust Productions and everyone associated with the company,' Rust Movie Productions said. Apparently NOT. THIS is exactly why UNION'S matter! Union's ensure safety precautions are met - regardless of management's wishes.

Really sad and unfortunate, its like Brandon Lee all over again. Hopefully answers can be found soon. R.I.P rush rush rush is all we ever did in Emergency & Icu. a person HAS to follow the guidelines and checks or people die. Looks like the lack of strong safety guidelines lead to this death OR a purposeful choice to Ignore guidelines. Either way, someone 2 go to jail. Negligence!

What the fuck! Someone needs to go to jail, for real. Who loaded the gun with live ammunition and then handed it to Baldwin. Wow who’s running the show there. Someone needs to pay for that mistake. BTW, a Colt single action weighs over 1/2 lb more when loaded w/ live rounds + handles differently. It would take him 3 seconds to see if ANY rounds were in the chambers and a couple seconds more to see if they were blanks. Nobody is so rushed they can’t spare 5 seconds.

I accidentally fired a rifle once! I knew it was loaded. I'd never handled it before. All I did was put my finger on the trigger lightly and it fired! It had a 'hair trigger' and the owner failed to tell me that! The bullet missed a person by inches! I wonder if Alec was set up? Everyone who handled the guns are responsible for her death. Whoever loaded it w/ live rounds + left it unattended, the A.D. who grabbed it + ASSUMED it was “cold” and mostly is Baldwin himself! He aimed & fired a gun w/out verifying it was safe! Terrible thing to live with.

What a terrible waste of a life. It really is so unnecessary. I see that there are other employers besides that of Walmart who prioritizes speed over safety. It’s time we got a law passed to require safety above all other things in the workplace. No matter what your job is.

‘Rust’ Production “Devastated” Over Death Of DP Halyna Hutchins; Movie Halting For “Undetermined Period Of Time”Following Alec Baldwin’s discharge of a prop firearm on the set of his movie Rust at Bonanza Creek Ranch outside Sante Fe, NM today, which resulted in killing the pic’s DP Halyna Hutchi… No, “traditionally on a film set” firearms are handled by an armorer. Sending prayers 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️ that's so heartbreaking... Соболезную семье погибшей.

My God, that is horrific. Unquestionably a tragedy that didn't need to happen; why was there a prop gun on set with live ammunition? I hope this wasn't sabotage by a disgruntled crew member to 'prove' their point. Condolences to Ms. Hutchins' family, friends, and co-workers. 😢 I had better gun safety training when I was 7. There needs to be some regulations in place. I have an RTX3090 on my desk that can render CGI gunfire. It's cheaper than the cost of a human life

The Four Primary Rules of Firearm Safety Watch that muzzle- Keep it pointed in a safe direction at all times. Treat every firearm with the respect due a loaded gun. Be sure of the target and what is in front of it and beyond it Keep your finger off trigger until ready to fire The News industry also pushes employees too hard…long trips, no tome to recoup or have any resemblance of a personal life. I rarely see my husband, it’s ruining my health & marriage. cbs this was all fixed 25 yrs ago. Huh greedy corps?

Why is the LA times using this suspiciously passive language? 'Baldwin removed the gun from its holster once without incident, but the second time he did so, ammunition flew toward the trio around the monitor.' Ammunition just flew by itself? What a mess. Reading this, it seems this was the preventable outcome of a nickel and dime operation. Such an amateurish production company. Here in Ontario, the safety of cast and crew is taken very seriously. Shooting would've been shut down as soon as there was any concern.

Was the armorer an idiot if people were complaining? Did someone else load the gun to prove a point? Rush, rush, rush does not mean live rounds live rounds live rounds Why would live rounds even be allowed on the set, much less in a prop gun?

Why is there ever a need for live rounds on a set? What gets me is that they kept saying 'accidental discharge'. How the fuck do you accidentally discharge a revolver without pulling the trigger? Answer. It can't. I would have left the production. I'm not going to put myself intentionally someplace where I know there are safety issues. So sorry for these people that such a tragedy took place. Why would you trust anybody but yourself to check whether the gun is loaded or not? Sounds like a lawsuit Rushing to get a movie project finish without safety measurements is not professional at all period. wow..thats truly unfortunate .. what a great lost..
